Fire destroyed a home in Eden Township early Saturday evening, August 10. The fire at 43 Stony Hill Rd. was reported at 7:10 p.m. An occupant who was taking a nap was awakened by a smoke detector. That occupant escaped safely. Initial reports said a number pets were also in the house.
The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Because the fire was so intense, volunteers battled the flames from outside the house. "The conditions on arrival were too dangerous to make an attempt at an interior attack," Quarryville Fire Chief Joel Neff said.
Volunteers from Quarryville were assisted by equipment and firefighters from Bart, Refton, Willow Street, Robert Fulton, West Willow, Strasburg, and Lafayette fire companies.
The firefighters trucked water from a fill site at the intersection of Main St. and Rt. 222 in neighboring Providence Township. It took about 30,000 gallons of water to bring the blaze under control, the fire chief said.
Damage to the home was estimated at $230,000 with additional damage of $60,000 to the contents.
After the fire was extinguished, the ruins were too dangerous to enter to determine a cause.
