Martha Rhoads Landis, of Willow Valley and formerly Quarryville, died on Sunday, July 13, 2014. She was 94. Martha Elizabeth Rhoads was born April 1, 1920, the third child of Ervin Caleb Rhoads and Clara Elizabeth Book, and grew up on the family farm on Dry Wells Road, south of Quarryville. She graduated from Quarryville High School in 1938. She married Bud Landis in 1939. Bud and Martha started a fuel delivery business in Quarryville in 1950, and Martha managed the office side of the expanding Leon C. Landis, Inc., until it was sold to son Robert in 1982. Leon C. Landis, Inc. continues in the family and is now owned by Robert Landis, Jr., Park Avenue, Quarryville. Judy E. Thayer of Kirkwood died on Friday, July 11, 2014. She was 58. Mrs. Thayer was born in Englewood, N.J., a daughter of Robert N. Erickson of West Chester and the late Eileen Hansel Erickson. She loved horses and was a freelance riding instructor. Mrs. Thayer was the chairperson of USET Area #2 for several years. She also volunteered in the equestrian community, including at Fair Hill International and the U.S. Pony Club. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband of 32 years, Edward D. Thayer; her brother, Robert N., husband of Betty Erickson of Coatesville; her sister, Joann, wife of Ross Fritz of Westtown; and three nephews. Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Fair Hill International, 378 Fair Hill Dr., Elkton MD 21921. Arrangements were made through Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, Quarryville. Gary D. Roland Jr. died at Lancaster General Hospital on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. He was 34.
Mr. Roland was a son of Vicki and Chris Metzler and Gary D. Roland Sr. Russell M. Griest of Peach Bottom died at Hospice and Community Care, Mt. Joy, on Thursday, June 26, 2014. He was 85.
Mr. Griest was born in Little Britain, a son of the late Veryl and Stella Anderson Griest. He worked for Lukens Steel until he retired. Mr. Griest was an active member of the Eastland Friends Meeting House, where he served as a trustee and a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Bear Trap Hunting Club. Lester C. Jamison of North East, Md., died on Thursday, June 26, 2014. He was 90. Mr. Jamison was born in Fulton Township, one of 12 children born to Howard and Leta Dawson Jamison. He lived in Little Britain before moving to North East. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He worked for W.L. Temple and later was an independent trucker working out of the Cedar Hill and Maryland Materials stone quarries. He was a skilled mechanic and inspected trucks for Mar-Del Trucking until he was well into his 80s. Helen M. Crouse of Lancaster died at home on Monday, June 16, 2014. She was 83. Mrs. Crouse was born in Smithville, a daughter of the late Walter and Amy Louise Rudy Hoffman. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Crouse had been a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed refinishing furniture, antiquing reading, and tending her perennial gardens. She also enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church. Aimee L. Zahm of Nottingham, Pa. died Monday, June 9, 2014 in Fulton Township as the result of an auto accident. She was 23. Born in Lancaster, she is survived by her father John L. Zahm of Willow Street and her mother Mellissa L. Becker Zahm and stepfather Jamie Osborne of Nottingham. A homemaker and mother, Ms. Zahm graduated from Solanco High School and had just completed her LPN nursing training at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. She loved life to the fullest and especially her son Zaiden J. Osborne. Thomas A. Bailey of Kirkwood died at home on Friday, May 30, 2014. He was 66.
Mr. Bailey was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Benjamin W. and Ethel Thomas Bailey. He lived in Oxford before moving to Kirkwood. Dennis G. Bowen of Kirkwood died at home on Sunday, June 1, 2014. He was 62. Mr. Bowen was born in Coaldale, a son of the late John and Irene Cupak Bowen. He lived in Cheyney before moving to Kirkwood. He earned a bachelor's degree from West Chester University and taught history at the Woodlyne School, Strafford, for 16 years. After he retired from teaching, he founded and managed a marine science and environmental camp in Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada. Betsy Jo Sinclair Hess of Peach Bottom died at home on Sunday, May 25, 2014. She was 68. Mrs. Hess was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Betty Graybill Sinclair and the stepdaughter of the late Elizabeth Agne Sinclair. She graduated from Solanco High School in 1963 and was a homemaker in her earlier years. Mrs. Hess and her husband operated Fulton Market, Wakefield, for more than 13 years. She then worked as head seamstress for Yorgeys and Fillings Cleaner until she retired in 2010. She was an active member of Little Britain Presbyterian Church for 50 years. |
