Martha Rhoads Landis, of Willow Valley and formerly Quarryville, died on Sunday, July 13, 2014. She was 94. Martha Elizabeth Rhoads was born April 1, 1920, the third child of Ervin Caleb Rhoads and Clara Elizabeth Book, and grew up on the family farm on Dry Wells Road, south of Quarryville. She graduated from Quarryville High School in 1938. She married Bud Landis in 1939. Bud and Martha started a fuel delivery business in Quarryville in 1950, and Martha managed the office side of the expanding Leon C. Landis, Inc., until it was sold to son Robert in 1982. Leon C. Landis, Inc. continues in the family and is now owned by Robert Landis, Jr., Park Avenue, Quarryville. She was actively involved in Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, serving in a variety of positions including teacher of the 5 to 6 year old Sunday School class for 48 years (1937-1985), Deacon, Ruling Elder, Clerk of Session and leader of the Christian Endeavor youth program. She served as secretary for the Huffnagle Park Committee of Quarryville for 27 years. Martha survived polio in the 1954 epidemic with her typical determined grit.
“Nan” will always be remembered and loved for keeping her five children and their expanding families not only close to her but also connected to their extended Rhoads and Landis cousins. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ruth Minchoff of Quarryville, 5 children and their spouses: Robert Jerome and Goldie Trimble Landis, Quarryville, Janet and Walter Potter, Rockport, TX, Barbara and Willis Proctor, Bear, DE, Brenda and Kent Wade, Kirkwood, and Marti and Trent Saner, Quarryville, along with 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, a sister, Rita Rhoads Reed and a brother Jerome E. Rhoads. She was predeceased in 2011 by her husband of 72 years, Leon Christian “Bud” Landis, her brother Abram Josiah Rhoads and a sister Sadie M. Rhoads. Funeral Services will be at the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, PA on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. There will be a viewing at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 until 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers; contributions may be made in Martha’s memory to the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church at the above address.
