Joseph P. Phipps, Jr. of Paradise died at home Thursday, February 7, 2019. He was the husband of Mary E. Groff Phipps. He was 81. Born and raised in northeast Tennessee, he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Virginia Marley Phipps. He came to Pennsylvania for adventure and work, where he met the love of his life, Mary, and decided to make it his home. Mr. Phipps had been a foundry worker for Penn Malleable, and later worked with his son in the masonry business. As an adult, he fulfilled his lifetime dream of having and caring for his own horses. Mr. Phipps was an avid and accomplished roller-skater. Thomas K. Newill, III, 78, of Nottingham, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019 at Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster. He was the husband of Lorraine Dixon Newill. Born in Chester, he was the son of the late Thomas K. and Helen Shrom Newill. Thomas was a teacher for Avon Grove High School for over 31 years. He taught Agriculture then Driver’s Education. Thomas was an Athletic Director for 22 years, a Bus Scheduler, Cross Country Coach, served on the PIAA Wrestling Steering Committee and organized Cross Country Meets for 13 years. Judy A. Sharpe, 69, of Lancaster, was welcomed into her heavenly home on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, while surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Stanley C. Sharpe, with whom she shared 34 years of marriage. Born in Benson, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Theron Hucutt Austin and Melva Lee (Jacobs) Taylor. Judy graduated from Benson High School, class of 1967. She then went on to find employment in the banking industry in various positions for 40 years, most recently as branch manager of Jonestown Bank and Trust in Cleona, PA. Judy excelled at her job and many customers followed her from bank to bank. She enjoyed decorating, shopping with her daughters, golfing, and spending time with her grandchildren. Judy loved the Lord and she attended Grace Community Church of Willow Street. She was a true sweetheart, and family and friends had no doubt that she sincerely loved and cared about them. Ronald E. Schneider, 80, died unexpectedly on January 31, 2019, at a Woodlands Texas hospital. He was born March 25, 1938, in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, the son of John P. Schneider and Fanny (Yuninger) Schneider. Ronald graduated from Solanco High School, Class of 1956. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1977 as a Cryptologic Technician. He achieved the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer (CTRCS) and retired after 20 years of faithful service. He then continued his naval service in the civil government with the Office of Naval Intelligence, ultimately retiring in 1995. JoAnne R. “Jo” DuBree, 84, of Quarryville, entered into rest on Thursday, January 31, 2019. Born in Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Emma (Wade) Renier. Her husband, Ralph L. DuBree, Jr., passed away on August 23, 2016. After graduating from High School, Jo proudly went on to complete nurses training at L.G.H. in 1956. She went to work as a Registered Nurse for the State Health Department. In later years, she worked and retired as a Nursing Supervisor at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Jo was an active member at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed camping, fishing in the Outer Banks, and spending time with her family and the “Gang”. Surviving are daughters, Brenda, wife of Gary Braightmeyer of Quarryville and Bonnie, wife of Jeffrey Wolfe, of Mt. Joy. Jo was preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd and Ed, and sisters, Della and Dolly. Eugene F. “Gene” Handel, 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Quarryville of natural causes on Thursday, January 31, 2019. He was the loving husband of Dee Handel, with whom he would have celebrated 58 years of marriage on June 17, 2019. He was born in Lancaster County and was the son of the late Claude F., and Edna (Striggle) Handel. For 35 years, he worked in the home construction industry, including 10 years as a self-employed finish carpenter. Most recently he was a driver for J&R Bakery, until his retirement in 2018. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Sharon Handel and his brother, Gerald Handel of Willow Street, as well as his best friend, Jake the dachshund. |
