Shirley A. “Mom-Mom” Anderson, 75, of New Providence, formerly of Quarryville, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of the late James L. Anderson, with whom she shared 42 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2004. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Paul and Wilma (Barker) Spencer. Shirley was a graduate of Oxford Area High School, class of 1961. In her early years she was employed by Avon at their manufacturing plant. She also was employed in various retail positions during her lifetime. She is survived by a son, Dennis Anderson, and wife Donna, of Columbia; daughter, Diane Neyman, of New Providence; sister, Patricia Toner, and husband, Tim, of Stuarts Draft, VA; grandchildren, Megan Eckardt, Courtney Neyman, Jessica Neyman, and Steven Anderson; and 6 great-grandchildren. June B. Hamilton, 73, 0f Stony Hill Road, Quarryville, PA died at her residence on Friday, February 15, 2019. Born in Manheim, she was the daughter of the late Lester Vernon and Mae Marie Armstrong Simon, Sr. June retired from Precision Form where she was employed as a machinist. She was an accomplished artist who enjoyed painting, refinishing furniture, and inventing useful tools. But most importantly, she enjoyed time with her family, grandchildren and friends. June was a member of Soroptomist International. Surviving her are three children, Christine wife of John Rodgers of Honeybrook, Fredrick Sprout, III of Quarryville, Shelly Hockenbrocht of Lancaster; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; five siblings, Lester Vernon Simon, Jr. of Holtwood, Dawn M. Campbell of Newark, DE, Charlotte M. Henderson of Quarryville, Kathleen M. Lewis of Strasburg, and Susan B. Baughman of Manheim. Carol Lynn Wever, 77, of Lancaster and formerly of Holtwood, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, due to ALS. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Geraldine (Hunsberger) Heffie. She was the loving wife of R. Wayne Wever for over 53 years. Carol graduated from Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia and worked as a registered nurse at Willow Valley. She was an active member of Providence Church of God (New Providence), where she was the founder and director of the Change of Pace-South Women’s Bible Study. Carol and Wayne previously lived in Princeton, NJ, for 27 years where they were active members of Stone Hill Church (formerly Westerly Road Church) and discipled college students with the Princeton Christian Fellowship. Carol was a wonderful hostess who enjoyed entertaining, coordinating large events, having great conversations, and connecting others together. She was always creating memories. In addition to her husband, Carol is survived by 2 daughters: Linda Kerr of Willow Street and Sarah, wife of Roger Waterman, of Seattle, WA. Also surviving are 3 beloved grandchildren: Josiah Kerr, and Carson and Kailee Waterman; and a sister, Marilyn, wife of David Weaver. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Wever; a son-in-law, Ken Kerr; and a sister, Linda Heffie. Dean E. Wert, Sr., 97, of QPRC and formerly Quarryville, entered into rest on Tuesday, February 12, 2019. Dean was born on the family farm in Potter Township, PA, the son of the late Claude Edward and Lillie (Frank) Wert. He and his wife, Dottie (Boozer) Wert had celebrated 69 years of marriage in June. Dean graduated from Boalsburg High School in 1941, where he studied agriculture along playing soccer and baseball. Dean proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps, where he served in the South Pacific and on occupation duty in China until 1946. Following the service, Dean worked for Penn Line Co. as a foreman of a construction crew, which brought him to Quarryville, where he worked 36 years for the former Commonwealth Telephone Co., now Frontier. His jobs included lineman, installer, cable splicer and switchman. Anna M. “Ann” Deshong, 85, of New Providence, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at her home. Born in Bedford County on September 6, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Rush and Thersa (Gehm) Ritchey. Ann attended Everett Area High School. After high school, Ann worked for several years at the Howard Johnson’s in Bedford. She then moved to Southern Lancaster County and was employed by Solanco Daycare for 23 years as a classroom aide. Ann’s love for children led her to study child development and enroll in several college courses. She was an active member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church in Mechanic Grove, where she taught Sunday school classes for 2- & 3-year-olds for 40 years. Annabelle (Ann) Prewitt, 80, of Oxford, PA passed away on Monday, February 11, 2019 at her home. She was the devoted wife of Richard D. Prewitt, Sr. with whom she shared 58 years of marriage. Born in Spanishburg, WV she was the daughter of the late William Lonnie and Danis Severt Jones. Ann was formerly employed with Bell Telephone. She served as secretary for the family business, Prewitt’s Garage, Oxford, and was the Tax Collector for Lower Oxford Township for many years. Ann was a member of Kennett Square Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, particularly her roses, bird watching, all sports, especially college football and basketball, and spending time at their second home in Breezewood, PA. Arthur David Hanby, 69, of Oxford, passed away, Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Rose City Nursing and Rehab, Lancaster, PA. He was the husband of the late Helen C. Hanby with whom they shared 34 years of marriage. Born in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Charles and Doris Schultz Hanby. Arthur farmed for most of his life in Oxford Twp. He was a lifetime member of the Fox Hunting Club. He is survived by three sons, Anthony B. (Paula E.) Hanby, Clayton J. Hanby both of Nottingham, and Jason A. (Dana A.) Hanby of Cochranville; six grandchildren, Clifford Zell, Steven Zell, Demitrious Hanby, Damon Hanby, Mason Hanby, and Kaden Hanby; and four great-grandchildren. Pinkie V. Shiplet, 97, of Oxford, PA passed away Monday, February 11, 2019 at Ware Presbyterian Village, Oxford. She was the wife of the late Bizeel W. Shiplet. Born in Grundy, VA she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Etta Reedy Van Dyke. Pinkie retired from the Oxford News Shop and was formerly employed with Towne Drug of Oxford. Pinkie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oxford. She was also a member of the Oxford Senior Center. She is survived by her two sons, William Wesley Shiplet (Julie Thompson) of Oxford and Donald J. Shiplet (Sue VanLone) of Jasper, GA; one daughter, Virginia S. Alexander (Britten, Jr.) of Oxford; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Nell Delp of North East, MD. Kenneth W. DeLong, 70, of Quarryville passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 7, 2019. He was the husband of Eleanor A. (Astle) DeLong. They would have celebrated 45 years of marriage on July 13, 2019. Born in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late M. Clair and Miriam E. (Barr) DeLong. He graduated from Solanco High School in the class of 1966. Ken was a member of Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church in Quarryville. His hobbies included collecting antiques, camping, and tinkering in his woodshop. He worked on the family farm, along with his two brothers. "I love my job" and "I'm proud of our farm" were two things he said often. Joseph P. Phipps, Jr. of Paradise died at home Thursday, February 7, 2019. He was the husband of Mary E. Groff Phipps. He was 81. Born and raised in northeast Tennessee, he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Virginia Marley Phipps. He came to Pennsylvania for adventure and work, where he met the love of his life, Mary, and decided to make it his home. Mr. Phipps had been a foundry worker for Penn Malleable, and later worked with his son in the masonry business. As an adult, he fulfilled his lifetime dream of having and caring for his own horses. Mr. Phipps was an avid and accomplished roller-skater. |
