William Daniel Fisher, age 93, entered the Church Triumphant at Lancaster PA on December 11, 2023. Bill was the loving husband of the late Barbara Smith Fisher who died September 27, 2020 after 67 years of marriage. Born in Quarryville on January 17, 1930, he was the son of the late Veryl C. and Mazie Reinhart Fisher. Bill was a devoted man with a passion for integrity and hard work. He dedicated his time to his education, his career, his community, his church and his family. Bill grew up in Quarryville and was the Class President of the first graduating class of 1948 from Quarryville High School where he played baseball and basketball. He was the co-winner of the Outstanding Athletic Award at graduation. He was President of the Leader’s Club (student council) and served as Youth Day Mayor of Quarryville on the Groundhog Party Ticket. Following high school, Bill graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a BS degree in 1952 where he also played baseball. He then received a Graduate Degree from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University in 1964. At Rutgers, Bill studied law under Dr. Austin Scott, the “Father” of the Trust & Estate Industry. Following his college education Bill entered the US Army. He spent two years at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where he served as an instructor in Ordnance School teaching Ammunition Renovation, Repair and Explosive Ordnance Demolition. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. In 1954 Bill joined Lancaster County National Bank as a management trainee. He became the Assistant Trust Officer when the bank was known as Lancaster County Farmers National Bank. He rose to Vice President and Trust Officer when the bank was National Central Bank. Bill retired at age 60 as Vice President & Senior Trust Officer with Corestates Bank in 1990.
After a 2 year retirement he was employed as a part-time consultant for Bank of Lancaster County – Trust Department. He became a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Trust Administration Committee of Sterling Financial Trust Company after it was spun off from Bank of Lancaster County Trust. One of Bill’s job responsibilities included the Lancaster Theological Seminary leading him to serve as a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer for 32 years. Bill’s community memberships and involvement included serving many years as Chairman on the Lancaster County Community Foundation Board of Trustees, serving 10 years on the Executive Committee of the Board of Lancaster County Community Foundation Governing Committee. He was also active in Boy Scouts at the Lancaster-Lebanon Council and Local Troop #58 levels, Honorary Lifetime Member Rotary Club of Lancaster, member emeritus of The Tucquan Club, Lancaster Pirates, the longest tenured and oldest member of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville class of 1967 where he also served on the board of Hibernating Governors. He was also a member of the Hamilton Club of Lancaster, Meadia Heights Golf Club, Stone Harbor Country Club, Quarryville Rod and Gun Club, Quarryville American Legion, Strasburg Sportsmen Club, Masonic Lodge #156 Free and Accepted Masons as a 60 year member, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection where he served as Trustee, and the Harrisburg Consistory. In addition to his role with the Lancaster Theological Seminary Bill was a member of the former Zion United Church of Christ, New Providence, where he served as an Elder and past President of Consistory during the church’s 175 year anniversary in 2005, former member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Quarryville where he was a member since birth and served as a Deacon and Elder. He was a current member of Willow Street United Church of Christ. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling to 45 states in the United States and travel overseas. He particularly enjoyed the family cottage in Avalon, NJ which he and the family restored from a barely livable cottage to a comfortable spot for the family to enjoy. They restored the cottage themselves after its purchase when it was slated for destruction due to its condition and they did a complete renovation after being flooded by Hurricane Sandy in 2011. The cottage in Avalon became the gathering place for the whole family on vacations, holidays, and weekends. Bill and Barbara moved to an apartment in the Manor Complex at Willow Valley Communities which was a half mile from their residence in Willow Street. This enabled Bill and Barbara to spend more time in Avalon in the spring and fall. Bill started hunting and fishing in high school which continued through his working career. After retirement, Bill increased his hunting and fishing greatly with ocean fishing in Avalon, and hunting and fishing trips in PA, Northwestern US and Canada. Bill is survived by his two sons, William Douglas Fisher of Strasburg, David Charles (Victoria) Fisher of Wernersville; and a grandson Jason David Fisher. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his sister Polly (Thomas) Fisher Orsagh of North Carolina. After Barbara’s passing Bill enjoyed good times and companionship with his close friend and classmate Erma Graybill Herr. Most of all, he was a family man, who was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Funeral services will be held from Willow Street United Church of Christ, 2723 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 11:00AM with Rev. Dr. James Haun officiating. Interment will be in Quarryville Cemetery. A viewing will be held at Reynolds and Shivery Funeral Home, 144 East State Street, Quarryville, PA on Monday from 6:00-8:00PM and again on Tuesday from 10:00AM until the time of service at the church.
