Stanford F. Cox of Lancaster died at home on Friday, November 29, 2013. He was 87. Mr. Cox was born in Russellville, a son of the late Frank G. and Marie E. Dubbs Cox. He spent much of his early life near Unicorn, southern Lancaster County. After serving with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II, he earned a bachelor's degree from Elizabethtown College. He later earned a master's degree from Temple University. Mr. Cox taught for two years in the Pequea Valley and Dallastown school districts. He then taught for 23 years in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. During his time at L-S, he chaired the committee that named the new Martin Meylin Junior High School.
He served as president of the L-S Education Association, the Lancaster County Education Association, and the East Drumore High School Alumni Association. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member and past president of Ephrata Lodge 665, F.&A.M.; a member of the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection; and a member of the Reading Lodge of Consistory. He was a salesman for the World Book Encyclopedia, earning numerous awards and citations of excellence. Mr. Cox was a 50-year member of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren, where he served on the board of directors, was a deacon, was an usher, and taught junior high Sunday School. He enjoyed spending time with his family and searching local quarries for rocks, minerals, and gems. Mr. Cox is survived by his wife of 60 years, Grace Buckwalter Cox; four children, Lucinda, wife of Randy Subers, Audrey, wife of Kent Shisler, Timothy Cox, partner of Keith Pope, and Steven Cox, husband of Beverly Ressler; six grandchildren, Sarah and Leah Shisler, Tyler, Ashley, Melisa, and Rachel Cox; a younger brother, Clarence Cox of Elizabethtown; and a younger sister, T. Grace Ziegler of Myerstown. A memorial service will be held at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 21. Burial was in the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heifer International, One World Ave., Little Rock AR 72202.
