Shirley Marie (Harnish) Helm, 88, of Willow Street, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on April 30, 2019 at home, surrounded by her family. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Bertha (Nonannmocher) Harnish. She was the loving wife of Paul W. Helm for 68 years. Shirley grew up on a dairy farm in Southern Lancaster County, and graduated from Solanco High School in 1949. She lived an exciting life going from milking cows and doing field work, traveling on a motorcycle, piloting her father’s plane, driving solo to Texas, to living on Shepherd A.F.B. for two years while Paul was stationed there. In addition to being a private-duty caregiver, her biggest accomplishment and joy was being a wife, mother, and homemaker. Shirley loved spending time with her family and was a dear friend to many. She was always willing to serve others in any way she could. Cooking and entertaining were a great passion of Shirley’s and she was known for her chocolate cake with caramel icing. Her whole life, she enjoyed spending time with her pets.
In addition to her husband, Shirley is survived by 5 children: Janett Murphy (companion Larry Musser), Lorie (Charles) Fogle, Stephen (Claudia) Helm, twins Michelle (Todd) Carvin and Matthew (Tamara) Helm, 15 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a brother, Edwin Harnish. Shirley was an active member of Refton Brethren in Christ Church for 33 years. A tribute to her life will be at Refton BIC, 110 Church Street, Refton, PA on Monday, May 6th, 2019 at 11:30 am. The family will greet friends at the church from 10-11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please contribute in Shirley’s memory to No Longer Alone Ministries, 630 Janet Avenue, Lancaster, 17601 or Hospice and Community Care, P.O.
