Margaret Josephine ‘Jo’ (Grumelli) Young entered into rest on the morning of June 9th in her 93rd year at the Mount Joy Hospice Center. She was born on May 27nd, 1922 to Italian immigrant parents, the late Giovinio (Scortico) Grumelli and Antonio D. Grumelli, who settled in the village of Georgetown, Bart Township, Lancaster County. She resided in Georgetown her entire life, within ½ a mile of her childhood home. After Josephine’s father died while working on the Low Grade Atglen-Enola rail line in 1930, her mother raised Jo, her three older brothers and two younger sisters alone through the Great Depression. Giovinio kept her family together by working six days a week in a Lancaster tobacco factory, then coming home to cook, do the housework, and tend a large garden. In later years, along with her siblings, Jo cared for her mother until Giovinio’s death in 1982. Before marrying her husband, Fred T. Young on February 15th, 1958, she worked at the Slaymaker Lock and Schick factories. When their son, Michael A. Young, was born in 1962, she devoted full time to being a wife and mother not only to Michael, but her four step children, Fred T. Young Jr., George Young, Linda Young (Lyall), and Charles Young and their spouses, and a loving Grandmother to their many children and grandchildren.
Fred, her husband, was born April 16th, 1910 near Mouth of Wilson, Virginia and died April 17th, 1988 after living since childhood in Pennsylvania. Jo lovingly cared for him his last 10 years after he had suffered a stroke. Josephine was always known for never being still, being it working in her garden and yard, cooking and canning, sewing, housework, tending to her pets, etc., she was always busy at something. She was an avid collector of curios and knick-knacks, combing garage sales for some new treasure. She also was known for turning any stranger into a friend in minutes, always able to start a conversation in any situation. She was loved by all who knew her, especially her dozens of nieces and nephews. Besides her son and stepchildren, she is survived by Dorothy (Shoemaker) Grumelli, wife of her late oldest brother Victor E.W., her older brothers Anthony D. ‘Tony’ (husband of the late Marie E. Thomas), George A. (husband of the late Evelyn V. ‘Emmy’ Welk), and younger sisters Lucy E. (wife of Melvin P. Trago) and Margie E.(wife of the late Maris A. Reinhart) and the last of her husband’s 11 siblings, Henry Young, Earl Young, and Naomi Young Anders. Josephine was of the Catholic faith, and attended St. Catherine of Siena Church of Quarryville. Her husband, Fred, was Presbyterian, and they blended their faiths well, getting married back when that was not always easy to do. She was proud that all three of her brothers, both her sister’s husbands, as well as six of her brothers-in-laws and a sister-in-law through her husband, had all served during WWII. Two of those brothers-in-laws gave their lives for their country. There are also stepsons, grandchildren, and many others in her extended family who have served or are serving in the Armed forces, of which she was equally proud. She was cared for in her last months by her son, Michael, and several extended family members and friends, who did all they could to make her last days as comfortable as possible. She, and her family, will forever be grateful for all their round the clock help. Services will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 955 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA on Saturday, June 14th at 11 a.m. with Rev Robert A. Yohe officiating. Interment will be in the Georgetown Methodist Cemetery. Friends may call at the Shivery Funeral Home, 111 Elizabeth Street, Christiana, PA on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Jo’s name to The American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603. shiveryfuneralhome.com Comments are closed.
