Lura M Keene, 98, of 300 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street, died Tuesday morning, February 11th, 2020, after a short bout with pneumonia. Lura was born in Sparta, NC to Donley and Vena Anderson in 1921. She was married to Charles Keene for 53 years. She resided in Quarryville for 59 years before moving to Willow Street. She served at St. Paul’s Church as a trustee, president of The Women’s Fellowship for several years and was active in various organizations. She helped to fund and decorate the library at St. Paul’s Church. She started a Love Mission for Solanco area children in need. “It’s all about showing others love and seeing their smiles and happy faces,” Lura said of the Love Mission. She graduated from Sparta High School and she worked at the Quarryville newspaper, the Quarryville drug store, The Red Caboose Lodge and Good’s Store. Lura loved gardening and flowers and was known for her good nature and smile.
Surviving are devoted nieces Myrtle Slade (husband Paul) and Carolyn Carpenter; loving nephews, Clifton Watson (wife Vivian), Thomas Watson (wife Barbara); and grandchildren, Elizabeth Hendrix Camm (husband John), Rebecca Hendrix and Bowie (grand dog); great nephews Stephen Slade, Eddie Slade (wife Sally), great niece Carolyn Guesman (husband Dan); great-great-nephew George Slade; and her dear friend, Joan Gorman. She wished to give gratitude for her tender care by the caring staff at Willow Valley Lakeside. Services and interment will be private.
