James L. Herr, 72, of Quarryville PA, passed away on January 5, 2016 following a courageous battle with lymphoma. He was the husband of Linda Barr Herr. They had celebrated 50 years of marriage. An active fireman, Jim had been a lifetime member of the Quarryville Fire Company. He had served as fire chief from 1979-1986 and was a past president. He had also been active in the Quarryville Community Ambulance. Jim was an avid fast pitch softball pitcher. He enjoyed hunting, and was a member of the Twin Mt. Camp, Potter Co. He had proudly served in the US Army (1968-1971) in the Vietnam War. Jim was a member of Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church where he was also a member of the men’s bible class. A lifelong farmer, he had worked at Agway, James Groff and Sons, and Grainco, Inc., all of Quarryville. He was born in Lancaster PA, a son of the late Paul M. and Esther L. Houck Herr. In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 sons; James (Melissa) Herr, Quarryville, Jay (Erica) Herr, Lancaster, 4 grandchildren; Emily, Owen, Colin, Nathan, siblings; Gordon (Lorraine) Herr, Quarryville, Mary Ann (Ray) Hershey, Manheim, Edith (Maris) Hess, Conestoga, and Kathy (Bill) Johnson, Quarryville.
Service will be at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, PA on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Viewings will be held at the church on Thursday evening from 6-8 PM and on Friday from 10-11 AM. Interment in the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
