Edna (Kirk) Chase Yarnall, 100, formerly of Kirkwood, entered into rest on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Edna came into this world in Independence, VA. Born to Wright and Margaret (Wagonner) Kirk, she was youngest of 10 children. Her father, Wright was a farmer and itinerant Baptist circuit preacher. Edna spent her early childhood as a farm girl, but moved with her family to the West Chester area at the age of 5. She graduated from West Chester High School in 1942. After graduation, Edna was employed at Schramm’s, Inc., in West Chester as a welder. This was during WWII and she was teasingly called “Rosie the Riveter”. During this time, she met Lovell Thompson Chase. They married in 1944, shortly before Lovell was deployed to Europe to serve in the Army. While he was deployed, Edna worked at the National Foam Company in West Chester. In 1947, after he was discharged, Lovell and Edna moved to Lancaster County and bought a farm on Spruce Grove Road in Kirkwood, where they lived until Lovell’s passing in 1986. Edna continued living on the farm until she was almost 99 years old.
Edna became a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood in 1946 and remained a faithful member until her passing. She was a member of Union’s Circle #1, contributed baked goods and volunteered for many church events. Edna sang alto in the choir and told anyone who asked that her faith was in Jesus Christ. Besides church activities, Edna enjoyed crocheting, doing jigsaw puzzles, reading, cooking, gardening, watching birds at her feeders, and spending time with her family. Edna is survived by 4 of her children: Linda (Chase) Brown, Thomas Kirk Chase, Michael Kirk Chase, and Elizabeth Faye White. Her youngest, Gail Suzanne Chase preceded her in death. A Memorial Service for immediate family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please direct gifts to Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Rd., Kirkwood, PA 17536 or Willow Tree Hospice Care, 616 E. Cypress St., Kennett Square, PA 19348. Arrangements entrusted to Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. Comments are closed.
