William W. Patrick, 91, of Oxford, passed away on August 12, 2020. He was the husband of the late Jean A. Patrick with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
William was born Feb. 20, 1929 in Portsmouth, VA. He was the son of the late Henry Thomas Patrick, ll and the late Mary Frances Peak. He was raised on a dairy farm in Virginia. In 1948 he joined the Navy and was a corpsman with the Marines in Korea. He was in the Inchon invasion and the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in 1950, where it was 30 below zero. A book was written about it, titled "The Last Stand of Fox Company." He met and married Jean in 1951. Her father wanted her to wait until she turned 20 to get married, so they had their ceremony 2 days after her birthday. After 4 years in the Navy he worked for the Post Office for 31 years and retired as Supervisor of Postal Operations in 1985. After retiring he worked part time at Collins Funeral Home for 10 years. After retiring from the second job he and Jean enjoyed trips and took 3 cruises with The Pacesetters of the Peoples Bank. Elizabeth Ann “Libby” Miller, 83, of Quarryville, formerly of Drumore, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Brandywine Hospital. Born in Drumore, she was the daughter of the late J. Stanley Stauffer, Sr. and Sara (Southern) Stauffer. Libby was a graduate of Solanco High School, class of 1954. After high school, she found employment performing clerical duties, first with Commonwealth Telephone for over 20 years, and then for Lancaster General Hospital in the business office, where she worked until retirement. Volunteering was a part of life for Libby. She served as a volunteer for the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society, Ware Presbyterian Auxiliary, Robert Fulton Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, the King’s Daughters organization, and the Farm Women’s Association at the Solanco Fair. Except for a few years as a child, Libby was a life-long member of Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church. In her spare time, Libby enjoyed traveling and making various kinds of crafts, most notably Christmas tree ornaments for family members. She made it a priority to take an interest in her grandchildren, regularly traveling around the country to attend their sporting events and recitals. Jeffrey A. Witmer, 66, of Quarryville entered into rest unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late Lloyd C. and Irene M. (Stoltzfus) Witmer. Jeff was the loving husband of Wanda (McComsey) Witmer. They had celebrated 41 years of marriage on August 4, 2020. Jeff was a 1973 graduate of Solanco High School. He went on to work for Pennfield, now Wenger Feeds for over 43 years. Jeff was an avid motorcycle rider and also enjoyed riding bicycle on the rail trail. He was meticulous in how he kept his yard and home. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time outdoors. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his friends and family. Marlin '"Toad" F. Herman, age 82, passed away at his home in New Providence on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 with his family by his side.’ He was the husband of Belinda G. Gaskin Herman, with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage with on February 24th.] He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Mahlon Herman and Merie Findley Young. He was a truck driver for Charles Chip for 28 years, then S&H Express. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as riding motorcycle, his 49 Ford pick-up and working in his yard. Robert L. Barron, 79, of Holtwood, died Sunday, August 9, 2020 at his home. Born in Gordonville, he was the son of the late Walter and Dorothy (Harsh) Barron. He was the husband of Joyce A. (Stevens) Barron for 45 years. Robert retired in 1995 from Armstrong World Industries after working 35 years as an electrician. He later worked at Muddy Run Park for 21 years. He was a member of the Smithville Church of God. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons: Robert Jr. (Robin) Barron, Oscar Miller and Brian (Sherry) Miller all of Holtwood. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Richard L. Hall, Sr. 83, of Schwanger Road, Elizabethtown passed away at his residence on Friday, August 7, 2020 following a brief illness. He and his wife, Jeanne M. Danz Hall would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on August 20th. Born in Quarryville, he was the son of the late Tillie McCullough. Richard retired from the former Federal Mogul in Lititz where he worked as an inspector in quality control. He was a member of Steel Workers Union, Local 1035. He served his country in the US Army for 9 years. Richard was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping and going to the mountains. Jerre Groff, 92, formerly of Strasburg, died Tuesday, August 4 at Oak Leaf Manor in Millersville8/6/2020
Jerre Groff, formerly of Strasburg, passed from this life on August 4, 2020 at Oak Leaf Manor, Millersville, PA at 92 years of age. He was born in Lancaster, PA on May 29, 1928 to the late R. Charles and Verdna (Welk) Groff. Jerre worked on several farms in the Strasburg area as a young man, including for his Uncle Lloyd (known as Bud) Welk and then as a baker for Brueninger's Bakery in Strasburg. He enlisted in the Navy at 17 years old. He had completed all of his required high school credits early so he enlisted during the school year to join the war effort. He was given leave after basic training so he could graduate with his classmates at Strasburg High School. He proudly served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph in the Mediterranean Sea area, escorting the hospital ship U.S.S. Hope immediately after WWII. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked for Hildebrand Meats in Strasburg, and then started his own painting business. Jerre had a paint, flooring and kitchen store on West Main Street in Strasburg for many years. During that time he served as a Justice of the Peace from 1960 to 1965. Lastly, he worked as a clerk at the Pennsylvania State Liquor Stores in the Manor Shopping Center and Quarryville. Ira L. Herr, Jr. age 93, formerly of Strasburg and more recently residing at Fairmount Homes, passed away at the Ephrata Hospital on Tuesday, August, 4, 2020. He was the husband of the late Nora Metzler Herr, who passed away on November 17, 1987. He was born in Willow Street, son of the late Ira L. Sr. and Mary I. Stauffer Herr. He was a member of Calvary Monument Bible Church of Paradise. In the past Ira worked as a tractor trailer driver for Herr Foods of Nottingham. He enjoyed driving, being outside, and exploring things. He really loved ice cream! Ruth A. Furches, age 91, of West Grove and formerly of Oxford, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2020, at the Twin Pines Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Joseph D. Furches, Sr. who passed away on March 26, 1999. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Marcus and Edith McNiss Pless. In her free time, Ruth loved flower gardening and crocheting. Travis R. Work, 34, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 30, 2020. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Benjamin L. and Dorothy S. Work, of Quarryville. Travis was a 2004 graduate of Solanco High School. For the last ten years he was employed by UTZ Quality Foods. Travis was an avid modified softball player and he also enjoyed playing golf. He was a devoted father to his children and he treasured the time he spent with them. Travis will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him. |
