Thaddeus James Atkin, Jr., 85, passed away at his home in Kirkwood on Saturday, February 17, 2024. Thad was born February 24, 1938. He graduated Parkesburg High School before proudly enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He believed in the adage “Once a Marine, always a Marine”. Upon his discharge from the Marines, Thad was employed by Acme for several years during which time he went to cosmetology and Business school. He and the love of his life, Joan, opened and operated a successful full-service styling salon from 1968 to 2008, while building a loving family. Thad very much enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, whether it was cruising overseas or RVing across the United States. Thad’s favorite time of year was October, when he would rent a condo in Myrtle Beach for his immediate and extended family to spend time together. Family was always the most important thing to him. Linda S. Haney, age 73, of Christiana, PA, passed away at her home on Monday, February 19, 2024. She was the wife of John Latta Haney, with whom she celebrated 52 years of marriage. She was born in Lansing, NC, daughter of the late Richard & Glenna Weaver. She enjoyed gardening, watching birds, working in her flower beds and watching NASCAR especially Dale Earnhardt Sr. & Jr. Jerry W. Smearman, Sr., age 82 of Christiana, Pa, formerly of Bethel Park, passed away at the Lancaster General Hospital on Sunday February 18, 2024. He was the loving husband of Carol Mandus Smearman, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage. He was born in Pittsburgh PA to the late Harry and Vera Johnson Smearman. He worked as a steel worker for American Shear Knife for many years and then as a custodian for the Upper St. Clair Alliance Church. He also served in the US Army. Jerry was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, loved to listen to the oldies and was a collector of many things. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family. Norma Elizabeth (Herr) Kreider, 98, formerly of New Providence, entered into rest on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the Mennonite Home. Born in Pequea Twp., she was the daughter of the late Elias G. and Esther (Landis) Herr. She was the loving wife of Howard Kreider, Jr. for 72 years at the time of his passing in 2018. Norma was a homemaker, helping her husband farm in New Providence for over 50 years. She was an active member of New Providence Mennonite Church, where she participated in the sewing circle and taught Sunday School. Norma enjoyed walking, flower gardening and taking part in neighborhood Bible studies. Mary E. Warner, age 91 of Quarryville, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024. She was the wife of the late Richard R. Warner Sr. and the late Amos G. Witmer. She was born in Providence Township, daughter of the late Raymond P. and Gertrude E. Groff Henry. She enjoyed reading and cross stitching. She is survived by 3 sons: Dennis J. (Shirley) Witmer of New Providence, Kenneth E. Witmer of Holtwood, James A. Witmer of Mountville, 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 11 step great grandchildren: Richard R. Warner Jr. (Cindi) of Arkansas, and Marianne Gerlach (Jeff) of Millersville, 5 step-grandchildren, 4 step great-grandchildren. Charles Henderson, 76, of Oxford, PA passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at home. He was the son of the late Everitt and Elizabeth Spahn Henderson. Charles was employed as an editor for the Chester County Press and was previously employed with Acme, Pike Creek, DE as a baker. He is survived by his nephew, John Sagers (Lisa) of Quarryville. Mary F. Stoltzfus, 3 year old daughter of Samuel R. Jr. & Susie L. Fisher Stoltzfus of 827 Pumping Station Road, Kirkwood, PA, passed away at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
She attended the Old Order Amish Church with her parents. Donald R. Harnish, 88, formerly of Strasburg, entered into rest on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at the Mennonite Home. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Alma (King) Harnish. He was the loving husband of Alice (Shissler) Harnish for over 67 years. Donald was a graduate of McCaskey High School and had served in the U.S. Marine Corp Air Wing as an aircraft electrician. Donald loved vacationing, especially when driving his motor home. He also enjoyed going on cruises and spending time at the cabin in Cumberland County. Raymond Mark McGovern, Jr., 56, of Red Lion, PA passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at his home. Born in West Grove he was the son of Monica N. Nickle Naylor of Willow Street and the late Raymond Mark McGovern, Sr. Mark grew up in Kennett Square and graduated from Bishop Shanahan, West Chester Class of 1986. He was a fan of the Phillies and Eagles and enjoyed watching all sports. Richard D. “Rick” Jackson, 66, of Manheim, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Hershey Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late N. Richard Jackson and Kay (Anderson) Jackson. Rick was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend. Throughout his life, Rick was known for his dedication and versatility. He worked tirelessly as a heavy equipment operator. Rick was a member of the Oxford Masonic Lodge #353 and was a life member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. For six years, Rick served as a Boy Scout leader for the PA Dutch Council. Rick’s adventurous spirit knew no bounds. He loved spending his time exploring the mountains. Whether cruising on his Harley through winding mountain roads or soaking up the sun at the beach, he found joy in every journey. |
