by Bud Hart Solanco brought home two championships from the District III, Section 2, wrestling meet held at Hempfield High School on Saturday, February 18. Junior A.J. Wilson (152) was the first Mule to accept the gold on the podium after handing second seeded Luke Hirtzel (Warwick) an 18-3 technical fall at the 5:47 mark. Soon after Ben Root (170) stood atop the podium having pinned McCaskey’s, Carlos Lugo, the third seed, in one minute and 57-seconds.
Two other Mules made it to the finals, but settled for silver. Grayson Charles, the third seed going in, faced the top seed Lower Dauphin’s freshman Clayton Ulrey at 138, and lost by fall. Josh Weder (195) lost by a close 5-4 decision to second seeded, Donegal sophomore Keegan McCord. All four Golden Mules qualified for District competition. Three other Solanco grapplers finished sixth in their respective weight class, freshman Joey Vandegrift (132); senior Billy Maeda (145) and junior Kaleb Tucker (220). Solanco scored 140 team points to finish third behind Central Dauphin (200) and Lower Dauphin (165). Wilson, Root, and Weder were seeded number one at the tournament's start. Wrestlers from 15 schools were entered in the tournament. In addition to Solanco, teams from Central Dauphin, Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield, Hershey, McCaskey, Lampeter-Strasburg, Lower Dauphin, Manheim Central, Manheim Township, Milton Hershey, Palmyra, Penn Manor and Warwick competed. According to District III, 3A, power rankings Solanco is ranked 23 from a field of 58 schools. Cocalico is the only Lancaster-Lebanon League school ranked in the Top 10. Comments are closed.
