by Bud Hart It was not a good week for the Solanco boys’ basketball team as the Mules lost to both L-S and Elizabethtown. On Tuesday, January 24, L-S held a 26-16 lead at the half and coasted to a 62-47 win. “We did not play with the energy needed to win a game against a good team,” said Coach Scott Long. “L-S did a nice job of being physical with us and making us uncomfortable.” Long said his team had a great Monday practice and he and his staff were confident coming into the contest. L-S mixed in some zone defense and the Mules struggled to get decent looks, especially inside. “A bright spot on the night was Aaron Constein,” the coach said. “Aaron had 19 points and played really aggressively.” Dylan Hastings also had a decent night, adding 15 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Others scoring for the Mules were Mike Worthington and Robbie McHugh who each contributed four points. Jack Boomsma added three and Braden Redcay two. The Mules connected on 13 of 17 (76.5 percent) from the foul line On Friday, January 27, the Elizabethtown Bears reduced the Mules chance for playoff contention defeating them 64-60 in overtime.
The host team held the visiting Mules to 16 first half points. “We didn’t have a great first half, as we missed numerous layups and free throws,” said Long. Solanco managed only eight for 15 (53.3 percent) from the charity stripe. With E-town holding an 18-point advantage during the third quarter, Solanco made a furious fourth quarter charge scoring 31 points to send the game into OT. “Our guys fought all the way back and Colin Kilgore hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 57 with 14 seconds remaining in regulation,” added Long. The Mules made a defensive stop in the closing seconds to force the four-minute period. “In OT we struggled to get looks and committed three turnovers,” said Long. “E-town hit a three on their first possession and never looked back.” Hastings finished with 30 points and now needs but 14 to join the Golden Mule, 1,000 point club. The last Solanco boy to accomplish that feat was now junior varsity head coach Zac Bauermaster. Constein continued his hot streak, pumping in 15 points, 11 coming in the fourth quarter. Only two other Mules added to the score. McHugh contributed 10 points and Kilgore five. The Mules visit Ephrata on Tuesday, January 31, and host Donegal on Friday, February 3. Comments are closed.
