by Bud Hart Coach Chad McDowell saw 11 of his players score, led by Jess Cabrera’s 25 points, as Solanco's varsity girls basketball team trampled host Lebanon 63-42 Tuesday night, January 3. Joining the sophomore Cabrera in the scoring column were Aleska Burger (8), Nikki Boultinghouse (6), Elaina Daily (6), Grace Kreider (5), Jenna Dombach (4), Jen Eberly (2), Kara McClune (2), Alyssa Henretty (2), Alana Yoder (2) and Hanna Phillips (1).
Lebanon took an early 9-6 advantage. But after making some defensive adjustments, Solanco went on a 15-0 run and never looked back, holding a 31-15 lead at the half. “Once we increased our defensive pressure we were able to create turnovers and we were able to get out in transition,” wrote McDowell. “Our guards did an outstanding job putting pressure on Lebanon’s guards.” According to the coach, Cabrera had one of her more solid games adding four steals to her game night accomplishments. “She was able to get to the basket for some easy points, which opened up her outside shooting game. When Jess is locked in, she shoots the ball very well and against Lebanon she was locked in.” Kreider scored in single digits, but had seven assists, seven steals, and four rebounds. Burger and Daily each pulled down six rebounds and Eberly pulled down four off the boards and was credited with five steals. With 11 players scoring, Coach McDowell said he is pleased to have an unselfish group of girls. “For us to continue to be successful we need to continue to play unselfishly,” said the coach. “I am proud of everyone’s effort.” Solanco’s junior varsity ran their record to 6-1 with a 42-25 win over Lebanon. The Golden Mules continued their winning ways handing Ephrata a 54-42 defeat at Ephrata on Friday night, January 6. Jumping out to a 9-1 lead and a 13-5 margin after the first eight minutes, the Mules seemed to have everything under control. However, the Mountaineers rallied in the second quarter and after the half took a 23-22 lead midway in the third quarter. Dombach’s basket put the Mules up 24-23 and from there the visitors never trailed. “We were able to execute well late in the third quarter and throughout the fourth quarter,” said McDowell. “We had several key possessions that I thought we were patient and made good decisions on the offensive end, which leads to some easy baskets.” McDowell said he was pleased with the way his Mules played defensively holding Ephrata’s top shooters to a minimum of opportunities. “I thought we played a solid defensive game and we got stops when we needed them,” added the coach. “Our end of game execution was another key in the contest.” Burger, the MVP in the Solanco Holiday Tournament, led the team with 13 points. Cabrera followed with 12. Other Mules adding to point total were Kreider (8), Boultinghouse (8), Dombach (2), Eberly (1) and Mowrer (1). In a hostile atmosphere, Coach McDowell was pleased with his young team’s composure. “I am very proud of the girl’s efforts,” said McDowell. “This was a big win on the road against a Section II rival.” The Solanco junior varsity improved their record to 7-1 with a 33-20 win over the Ephrata JV. Fatigue may have been a factor and three consecutive away games didn’t help as Solanco dropped a 42-38 game to York Suburban. The Mules opened with a 20-5 first quarter lead, but the home team made some defensive adjustments and the lead narrowed. At the half, Solanco led 24-22 and entering the fourth quarter held a five-point advantage, 31-26. From there it was Suburban taking control. “In the fourth quarter I thought our defensive rotations were somewhat slow and we did not move well Continued on Page 14 Continued from Page 13 enough on passes and York Suburban hit some shots,” said McDowell. “For a week where we had three big games, I am proud of our efforts and our perseverance on the court and for going 2-1 on the week.” Burger led the team in points scored with 12. She was the only Mule to hit double digits. Others in the point column were Kreider (6), Cabrera (6), Dombach (6), Boultinghouse (4), Eberly (2) and Mowrer (2). Comments are closed.
