Despite a difficult week, the Solanco baseball team remains in good position for a league playoff berth and likely can still qualify for districts by winning the rest of their regular season games. The Mules' section title hopes were dealt a death blow by Ephrata Thursday. The host Mounts downed Solanco 5-1.
"We had this game circled on the schedule for a while," coach Tom Fish said. "I was disappointed in the result but not disappointed in the way we played. We were aggressive at the plate and hit a lot of balls hard but they just didn't fall in." Solanco scored its run in the third when Joe Murray singled and scored on a Damon Kreider double to cut the deficit to 3-1. Trailing 4-1 in the fourth, the Mules had a golden opportunity to draw closer or take the lead. Darren Rutledge walked and Eric Lefevre singled. The next batter struck out. Brady Thomas drilled a shot but the Ephrata shortstop made a great grab and turned it into a double play. Solanco ace Zack Leonard took the loss. "Ephrata did a nice job of making contact and making us field the ball," said Fish. The loss drops Solanco three games behind the section-leading Mounts but the Mules enter the week with a 1 1/2 game advantage over third place Conestoga Valley. "If we get on a roll this won't be the last big game we play," Fish said he told his team. "The kids played well but we just didn't come away with the win." The Mules upended McCaskey 6-3 last Wednesday. Rutledge recorded the win. "He pitched to contact and the guys did a nice job in the field," Fish said. "Brady Thomas made some nice plays at shortstop and James Rohrer and Damon Kreider ran down a couple of fly balls in the outfield. Our gloves really came together." Kreider was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Bailey Keys also had two hits including a double and had an RBI and scored a run. On Monday, April 21, Hempfield handed Solanco a 15-0 defeat in three innings. "I didn't expect that," Fish said. "It came out of nowhere." Hempfield jumped on top with six runs in the first inning. "It was a tough one to deal with," said Fish. "I thought we were ready to play but we must not have been." Comments are closed.
