by Bud Hart The Mules swept the 110-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash disciplines on their way to a 94.0 – 55.0 victory over Ephrata on Monday, May 2 on Solanco's track. Solanco’s record now stands at 3-3. Nick Yannutz (19.1), Matt Weitzel (20.9) and Patrick Workman (22.7) finished one, two, three in the hurdles event and Eric Hopkins (12.1), Kyle Dombach (12.2) and Nafis Moore (12.3) did likewise in the 100-meter dash. Hopkins (25.2) took top honors in the 200-meter dash with Tyler Williams (25.3) and Britian Yoder (25.4) following.
Yannutz, a freshman, also won the 300-meter hurdles. Rob McHugh was a double winner finishing first in the long jump (19’8”) and triple jump (42’1”). The senior set a personal best in the triple event. Dylan Sheaffer continued winning multiple disciplines launching the shot put 45’11.75” and the discus 121’9”. Alex Hindman threw the javelin 150, his personal best, to win that event and Billy Maeda pole vaulted to a height of 10’3” to win that discipline. Maeda vaulted to his personal best earning his first win. Also finishing second for the Mules were Yoder (400-meter run), Weitzel (300-meter hurdles), Alec Munro (800-meter run), Ben Stickler (3200-meter run), Logan Yalatchko (shot put), Dylan Sturgill (javelin) McHugh (high jump) and Ryan Yalatchko (pole vault). Earning one point for Solanco by placing third were Christian Stead (1600-meter run and 3200-meter run), Angel Daniel (400-meter run), Moore (long jump) and Mike Grech (triple jump). “We matched up well against Ephrata and the meet could have gone either way,” said head coach Ivan Haines. “The boys worked hard this past week to prepare for this meet. It was really nice to see all event areas scoring the points they needed." The girls were not as fortunate although winning eight of the 18 disciplines. They lost by a 93.0 – 57.0 margin. Jen Eberly again led the way with three firsts, winning the 100-meter hurdles (17.0), 300-meter hurdles (51.4) and the long jump (16’1”). Other first place Mule winners were Courtney Johnson (1600-meter dash/5:36.7), Alana Yoder (800-meter run/2:28.7), Anna Cooney (shot put/39’9.75”), Troyanna Miller (discus/97’4”) and Lydia Fetterman (javelin/98’3”). Solanco second place finishers were Sophia Baker (200-meter hurdles), Miller (shot put), Jacqueline Groff (triple jump) and Kelly Cook (high jump). Mules contributing one point finishing third included Baker (100-meter hurdles), Kerith Paine (400-meter run), Cook (triple jump), Montana Lockhart (high jump) and Sophia Plechner (pole vault). “Ephrata has a great team with a lot of depth,” said Haines. “We had a challenge earning second and third place finishes.” Haines was pleased for Eberly who qualified for Districts by jumping her personal best in the long jump. He also praised Johnson who ran her personal best in the 1600, and Cooney who now holds the second best shot put launch in the L-L League. Freshman, Alana Yoder, continues to impress her coach. “I am very pleased with the girls’ team performance,” added Haines. “Many of the girls were able to use the strength of Ephrata to be pushed to earn better performances.” The Solanco track and field teams participated in the 10th Millersville Cy Fritz Open held on Friday, April 28, at Millersville’s Biemesderfer Stadium. Several Mules placed within the top 10 at their respective disciplines of the more than 20 schools competing. Leading the way was freshman Alana Yoder, who won the 800-meter run in the time of 2:15.6. This established a new Solanco school record previously held by Solanco standout and Millersville University All-American, Priscilla Jennings (Landis). The previous record was established in 2005 at the PIAA District III championships. Also establishing a school record was Morgan Perry in the 2000-meter steeplechase. Perry finished fifth in the time of 8:46.1. Other top 10 finishers were: Boys: 1600-meter relay (third) Will Paredes-Jimenez, Angel Daniels, Mike Grech, Brit Yoder; Discus (fifth) and Shot Put (seventh), Dylan Sheaffer Girls: Long jump (second), 100-meter hurdles (seventh), 300-meter hurdles (sixth), Jen Eberly; 1600-meter relay (sixth), Eberly, Courtney Johnson, Kerith Paine, Yoder; Pole Vault (eighth), Sophia Plechner; Discus (sixth), Troyanna Miller; Shot Put (second), Anna Cooney, and Miller (sixth).
