Solanco's track and field teams lost to Garden Spot Monday, April 28. "We went up against two tough teams," Mules coach Ivan Haines said. "Performing in two meets within three days proved to be too much for two inexperienced and young teams. We also held people out of some of the events to rest them." The girls fell to 90-60.
The girls’ team was able to score 60 points against this tough team," said Haines. "The team performed very well. This young team of girls is going to be a well rounded and great team in the next year." Freshman Jen Eberly proved to be a great contributor to this year’s team, Haines said. Eberly won the long jump (15-3) and teamed with Abby Yoder, Carly Allport, and Natalie Crum to take the 4 x 400 relay. Crum prevailed in the 800 (2:33). Brooke McCardell continues to improve her height in the pole vault, jumping 11 feet which again set the school record. Yoder earned a win in the 400 meters (1:06) as well as helping the 4 X 800 (with Allport, Morgan Perry, and Courtney Johnson) and the 4 X 400 relays to earn their wins. “The girls’ team as whole continued to improve throughout the season and was very successful," Haines said. "It was nice to see the team improve as they did. They were just short in numbers. I look forward to seeing what each one of these young girls will be doing in the next few years." In the boys competition, the Spartans triumphed 89-61. “The boys’ team went into the meet with the idea of just maybe coming close to a win," said Haines. "With several key athletes injured or this was not to be. The team earned many personal bests to end the regular season, especially in the throws." Troy Berry prevailed in the high jump (6-4). Senior Hunter Johnson won the pole vault with his jump of 12 feet. Senior captain Toby Kreider triumphed in the long jump (20-6) and junior Kyle Munro captured the 800 meters (2:07). "Kyle has improved greatly this year," said Haines. "As the girls’ team is a young team so is the boys’ team," said Haines. "I am looking forward to seeing what this group can do next year. "Both teams have almost two weeks to concentrate on leagues and qualifying for districts. Both teams have done well this season and the staff feels that they have been very successful."
