The Solanco boys and girls track and field teams have a higher number of athletes this year which could lead to both individual and team success. Despite the increase in numbers, the girls squad will still rely heavily on underclassmen, coach Ivan Haines said. District qualifiers Jillian Eberly and Kristina King graduated and the Mules will be counting on underclassmen Natalie Crum, Carly Allport, Abby Yoder, and Morgan Perry. Crum, Allport, and Yoder each have track experience and Perry is a member of the cross country squad. Junior Essi Glah-Fisher and senior Dakota White will also contribute. Juniors Emily Conklin (javelin) and Brooke McCardell (pole vault) both qualified for districts last year.
Haines said Genevieve Eberly (hurdles and jumps) and Ashley Mundorff (throws) will also score points. "With the larger number of girls out we will have the chance to try different events to fill in where we need them," Haines said via email. "If the girls meet their individual goals we will have a successful year." District qualifier Toby Kreider will lead the boys' jumpers and sprinters. Robbie Hassel, Cody Riley, and newcomers Prosper Eguzouwa and Josh Bailey will help out in the sprints. Senior Connor Brown, juniors Noah Brady and Matt Curran, and sophomore Liam Hodgson top the list of middle distance and distance runners. Pole vault district qualifier Hunter Johnson will also sprint."We are looking for him to continue to improve in his jumping," Haines said. Tim Delp and Evan Hess will contribute in the hurdles and Kyle Munto (mid-distance) and Alec Munro (400) will pitch in. Casey Pierce heads the group of throwers. "This is one area where we will have to gain experience to be competitive. With only eight seniors there are many new or one-year experience athletes out this year in all events. Once they get down techniques and acquire some meet experience these new athletes should prove to be very competitive." The Mules were 4-3 in the section last season. "We are again setting individual goals as well as a team goal of being 5-2 or higher in our section," said Haines. Comments are closed.
