The Solanco tennis team suffered three losses after opening the season with a victory. Pequea Valley downed the Mules 6-1 Friday. Nell Keeport recorded Solanco's lone win by prevailing at number three singles 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 (tiebreaker). "She played consistently, moved her player around the court, and got to every ball," coach Annie Hammel said. "She was determined to win and pulled through with a win for the team." Marissa Witmer, Caity Cozzone, and Emily Duvall each lost in straight sets. Witmer/Cozzone and Faith Reimold/Thea McCullough were competitive in their doubles matches. "We always have a close match with Pequea Valley and the match was much closer than the scores show," Hammel said. Hempfield handed the Mules a 7-0 setback last Thursday. "Despite the 7-0 loss, the girls played a well-fought tennis match," said Hammel. "The scores against Hempfield were much closer than the scores against Manheim Township earlier in the week. It was great to win so many games off of one of the top teams in the section. It was a frustrating match for the girls due to bad line calls made by Hempfield players throughout the match." Solanco claimed 25 games vs. Hempfield compared to just 13 in a 7-0 loss to Manheim Township on Tuesday, August 26. The Mules started the season with a 5-2 triumph over Columbia Friday, August 22. Witmer won 8-2, number three singles player McCullough prevailed 9-0 and number four Emily Duvall triumphed 8-0. Erin Gerhart/Reimold won at second doubles and Solanco received a forfeit at third doubles. "We got off to a great start," said Hammel. "We were able to win our first match without repeating any players for singles and doubles." McCullough and Duvall were playing their first varsity singles match. "They both played consistent tennis," Hammel said. Comments are closed.
