Solanco's softball team won two of three crossover games against Section One foes last week. The Mules edged host Cedar Crest 3-2 Friday afternoon. Solanco led 3-0 before Cedar Crest scored once in the sixth and another in the seventh. The hosts had the bases loaded with two outs when Mules pitcher Hanna Phillips caught a Cedar Crest batter looking on a 3-2 pitch.
"Hanna made the pressure pitch," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. The Mules (8-4 overall, 6-3 league) scored single runs in the first and third in similar fashion. Bekah Borcky reached on an error in the first, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Cait Armstrong. In the third, Borcky reached on another error, moved up to second on an error, to third on an Abby Heidelbaugh fly ball, and scored on an Armstrong grounder. The Mules made it 3-0 in the fifth. Heidelbaugh was safe on an error and Armstrong doubled to put runners on second and third. Liz Mowrer reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Randi Rambo walked to force in a run. "You look at Wednesday when we couldn't hold the lead against Warwick," Miller said. "We talk about looking to improve and we were able to do that by holding onto the lead in a pressure situation. We kept battling and put the ball in play enough to be competitive. Hanna threw a lot of pitches during the week and was running on empty a little bit but made the pressure pitch." Last Wednesday, Warwick rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to top Solanco 5-4. The Mules had taken a 4-3 edge in the home half of the sixth. Borcky and Heidelbaugh both singled with one out and Armstrong delivered an RBI single. Solanco scored three runs in the fourth – all coming with two outs. Sydney Sturgill singled to left to get things going. Kate Sheaffer followed with another single to left. Both runners scored when Borcky hit a hard groundball off the shortstop's leg. Borcky went to second on a throw home and scored on a Heidelbaugh single. Trailing 3-1, Warwick tied it with two in the top of the fifth. "It was a back and forth game," said Miller. "It was a challenging game. Hanna threw well enough but gave up seven walks which is a little hard [to take] because she throws much better than that. We were trying to find the strike zone for seven innings which is challenging for the pitcher." Phillips tossed a five-hit shutout to help Solanco down Manheim Township 2-0 Monday, April 18. Phillips struck out six and allowed five hits and two walks. "Hanna pitched a good game and we made the plays," said Miller. The coach said the sophomore shortstop Rambo had a strong game on defense. Heidelabugh was 2 for 2 with two runs scored to spark Solanco's offense. The Mules scored a run in the third and tacked on one in the fifth. With one out in the third, Heidelbaugh singled to left and advanced to third when the ball rolled through the leftfielder's legs. She scored on a passed ball. "We were facing one of the best pitchers in the league and it was good to get a lead," said Miller. In the fifth, Borcky reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a Heidelbaugh hit to left. Solanco ended the week tied with Garden Spot for second place in Section Two, a game behind Elizabethtown. Comments are closed.
