The Solanco JV baseball team split a pair of games last week. The Mules dropped a 10-0 decision to Elizabethtown last Wednesday. Solanco had made an earlier trip to E’town and won in nine innings while playing as the home team. "Needless to say the Bears were eager for the rematch," coach John Girvin said. Matt Gote became the 10th Mule to see action on the mound. He was relieved by Derek Lavin in the third and Colin Ewaka pitched the fourth and the fifth.
Elizabethtown took the lead with three runs in the second. Solanco managed just one hit, a leadoff single by Mike Worthington. The Mules posted a dramatic 9-8 comeback win over Cocalico on Monday, May 5. Ewaka started for Solanco. He yielded a three-run homer in the first but then settled down to retire eight of the next 10 hitters. In the fourth, the Eagles added four runs to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Mules' bats came alive as Dawson Gote and Tony Osborne singled, Noah McCardell walked to load the bases, and Robert Beard doubled in a pair of runs. McCardell then stole home on a botched suicide squeeze to make it 8-3. Phil Quinn came on in relief in the fifth and held Cocalico in check. The Mules added three runs in the fifth. Worthington singled, Cameron Colvin walked, Derek Lavin singled in a run, and Dawson Gote hit a sacrifice fly. McCardell added an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-6. Thanks to solid pitching by Quinn, it stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh. Derek Lavin led off with a single and Dawson Gote walked. With one out, McCardell walked to load the bases. With two outs, Matt Gote walked to force in a run and Quinn delivered a line drive two-run single to center to give the Mules the thrilling walkoff win. "It was a super finish to what has been a tough weather-hampered season," said Girvin. Comments are closed.
