Under first-year coach Chad McDowell, the Solanco girls basketball team is seeking significant improvement from its one-win campaign last year. All five starters from last season graduated but several players have varsity experience. Two of those players – seniors Rachel Trout and Haley Conklin – will alternate at point guard and shooting guard. "I expect quality leadership with them being seniors," McDowell said. "I expect them to be floor leaders and keep things calm out on the floor." Junior Cayla Robinson is slated to be the first guard off the bench and sophomore Paige Borcky will also contribute. "I'm real comfortable with our depth at guard," said McDowell. Sophomore Jen Eberly and senior Taylor Stitz, who both got varsity minutes last year, will be the starters at forward. "Jen is really developing her game," said McDowell. "She has a great knowledge of the game." The coach said Stitz is a smart player and "the type of person who would do anything for the team. "Taylor will be asked to rebound and score when needed," said McDowell. Brittany Rhodes is capable of playing either guard or forward. Sophomore Sarah Frawley is also vying for playing time. Sophomore Nikki Boultinghouse can play either forward or center. Junior Megan Yannutz brings some varsity experience to the center position. "We expect Megan to anchor the middle of our offense and defense and will rely on her for rebounds and cutbacks." McDowell said the hallmark of the team will be hard-nosed man-to-man defense. "We plan to use pressure to create turnovers and force errors," he said. "Pressure the ball and get good help defense." The team's goals are simple. "We want to get better every day and play hard every game," said McDowell. "If we do that, the wins will take care of themselves." Comments are closed.
