by Bud Hart What a difference a month makes. In January the Mules defeated the Spartans of Garden Spot by 20 points (70-50) at home. This month, on Tuesday, February 7, they ended their regular season in New Holland and the Spartans lassoed the hapless Mules with a 57-39 loss, including holding them to single digits in three of the four quarters. “Let’s not forget Garden Spot is a very good team who is currently in the Top 10 of the District III power ratings,” said Solanco head coach Scott Long. “Garden Spot has excellent guard play and we had a lot of success last game playing our 3-2 zone.” Long said the Mules entered the game with the same mindset and it wasn’t the defense that spelled their doom. It was the offense and the team’s shot selection and turnovers. “We were two for 17 (11.8 percent) from the arc through the first three quarters,” said Long. "We didn’t get enough ball movement to open up driving lanes and settled for jumpers early in the possession. Shooting poorly with unforced turnovers is not a good combination and ultimately was the deciding factor in this game.”
Down 27-12 at the half, the Mules failed to come up with a solid second half run despite having nine players score, but only one in double digits. Aaron Constein led the team in scoring with 10 points. The junior guard was followed by Dylan Hastings (6) sophomore, Dawson Kreider (5), Colin Kilgore (5), Robbie McHugh (4), Dan Siegrist (3), Jon Rush (2), Braden Redcay (2) and Carson Kilgore (1). Solanco did hit for five treys with Constein credited with two. Kreider, Kilgore and Siegrist each had one. Six Mule seniors ended their regular season career, Hastings, Kilgore, McHugh, Alec Munro, Siegrist and Mike Worthington. “They worked very hard over the last year to reach their potential,” said Long. “As much as we will miss them, we are also excited about the underclassmen we have returning.” Why is the coach optimistic about next season? “With players from both our varsity and junior varsity, as well as our ninth grade team, I think we have a lot of youngsters who are skilled and play hard. Our future is bright here.” The Mules ended their season with an 11-11 record, the same as the varsity girls. Comments are closed.
