The Solanco boys basketball team dropped three games last week. Lancaster Catholic 68, Solanco 42 Colesen Sheaffer led the Mules with 12 points Saturday. Ryan Smith supplied 11. Northern Lebanon 29,
Solanco 27 Solanco felt like a frustrated fisherman following Friday night's 29-27 loss to visiting Northern Lebanon. This was one that got away. "That's kind of how we're feeling," Solanco coach David Long said. "I think it's something where they did a really good job of taking away what we were doing in the first half. We had 18 [points] in the first half, which is low for us, but they did a good job of taking away what we were doing. They made us really struggle. It's a team thing. As much as we've got to play better, we've got to hit more shots. We've got to coach better. That's a total team thing. It really felt like it kept, slipping, and slipping, and slipping. At halftime, we had our little lead and we were trying to hold on to it instead of just playing ball. I think that's what really got us at the end." Owen Treadway's two three-pointers in a 58-second span sparked the Vikings, who led just twice the entire game – 1-0 and the final score. Solanco was up 27-23 following a Zed Baker basket with 1:47 remaining. Treadway buried a three to make it a one-point game with 1:34 left. After a Solanco miss, Treadway buried another trifecta to put Northern Lebanon in front with 36 seconds to play. Up to that point, the Vikings had committed just three team fouls in the half so they twice intentionally fouled a Solanco player in an attempt to disrupt the Mules offense. Solanco had a chance to tie with four seconds left but Baker's contested jumper in the lane did not fall. Solanco scored 14 points in the second quarter and a total of 13 combined in the other three quarters. Both teams struggled mightily out of the gate with the Mules leading 4-1 at the end of the first quarter. Baker scored seven of his 16 points in the second quarter as Solanco led by as many as eight points and took an 18-11 advantage into halftime. Northern Lebanon narrowed the deficit down to 20-18 late in the third quarter before Baker hit a free throw and added a basket to up the edge to 23-18 heading into the fourth quarter. The Vikings employed a fullcourt trap in the second half and kept Solanco out of sync. "We talk about, when we see presses, making the 100 percent pass," said Long. "I think we got really into the 75 percent pass, where we're pretty sure we're going to make this pass, and if we make it we're going to score, but if they get a hand on it, they're going to score. I think we did too much of that. We just needed to take our time, work our way up the floor, and then, through our stuff, we're going to eventually be able to attack them. We were getting a little risky with trying to hit them right away." ELCO 62, Solanco 47 The visiting Mules lost to ELCO Wednesday night, December 18. Ryan Smith led Solanco with 18 and Colesen Sheaffer added 11. Comments are closed.
