Solanco's softball team won two of three games last week, including a critical section matchup with Garden Spot. On Friday, the Mules lost 3-0 to Section One Penn Manor in a crossover game. The Comets' ace Brittany Hook recorded 10 strikeouts and yielded just three hits – two by Abby Heidelbaugh and one by Sydney Sturgill. "Their pitcher threw real well," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. "We played with the level of intensity you need but we have to keep improving."
The Mules threatened in the fifth, but "ran ourselves into a challenge," Miller said. Solanco's Hanna Phillips notched nine strikeouts. Solanco downed Garden Spot 7-3 last Wednesday. "It was an important game," said Miller. "We needed to win this game. It was a big game and everyone responded well." The Mules (6-3 overall, 4-2 league) were the beneficiaries of seven Spartans errors, but also came through with some clutch hits. Solanco scored four runs in the home half of the first to take command. Bekah Borcky reached on an error to get things started and Heidelbaugh singled to left. Borcky scored when Liz Mowrer was safe on an error. Randi Rambo delivered a two-run triple and scored when Garden Spot dropped a fly ball off the bat of Brianna Firlein. The Mules added a run in the fourth on consecutive two-out singles by Heidelbaugh, Cait Armstrong, and Mowrer. Ahead 5-3, Solanco tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Heidelbaugh reached on a two-base error, moved to third on an Armstrong groundout, and scored on a deep fly out by Mowrer. Rambo singled to left, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a single by Kalyn Burger. "The sacrifice fly and Randi's hit were big plays," Miller said. "It made the seventh inning a lot easier." Phillips fanned 14. "She made the quality pitches when she had to," said Miller. Solanco routed Lebanon 15-0 in four innings. Armstrong had a huge day with three hits including a double and a triple and five RBIs. Mowrer was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Borcky had a hit and walked twice, knocked in three runs, and scored three times. Heidelbaugh had a hit, walked twice and was hit by a pitch, scored four runs and added an RBI. Kate Sheaffer tripled, walked twice, and scored three runs. "This was a game where you get your hits and score your runs and then move on," Miller said. The coach says there's still room for improvement. "The defense is making more plays and knows where to go most of the time, but we need to continue to get better." Comments are closed.
