Poor defense prevented the Solanco baseball team from winning a second straight game to open the season. The Mules made nine errors in a 5-4 loss at Wilson Saturday. "We did struggle," Solanco coach Tom Fish said. "We gave that one away, to be sure." All five Wilson runs were unearned. "It happened all over the field," said Fish. "There were fielding errors and throwing errors. We made our share of mistakes. It was disappointing."
After Solanco scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, Wilson answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half. The Mules made five miscues in the fifth inning alone to spoil a solid outing from starter Brady Thomas. "Brady was really, really strong," Fish said. "We are hoping he'll log a lot of innings for us and he was as good as we could've hoped. He deserved a better fate. He had great control. Everything they created, we helped them create. It was a bad loss but it would've felt much worse if Brady hadn't looked so good." Freshman Hayden Fox came on in relief and also impressed. "Both pitchers were awesome," Fish said. Wilson scored the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh. In the opener Tuesday, March 22, Solanco nipped Pequea Valley 5-4. Derek Lavin was the hitting hero. He was 3 for 3 with a stolen base and knocked in two runs including go-ahead tally with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Worthington went 1 for 2 and swiped three bases. "Mike really made things happen for us with his legs," said Fish. Trailing 2-1, Solanco tallied three times in the bottom of the fourth. Pinch hitter Ethan Cairns drove in a run with a ground out and pinch hitter Trent Myers had a sacrifice fly. Starter Joe Murray cruised through the first three innings before running into some trouble. Colin Ewaka wriggled out of a jam in the fifth and pitched a perfect sixth and seventh innings to earn the win. "In the preseason and in his first game, he was been literally flawless for us," Fish said. Pitching was a big bright spot in the first two games. "Coming into the season my biggest concern was pitching depth," Fish said. "That hasn't been a concern in our two games, but our problem (defense) has been something I wasn't concerned about."
