by Bud Hart On a snowy and blustery April 9, Solanco’s track teams spilt a home meet with visiting Elizabethtown. The boys defeated the Bears 94.0-56.0 while the girls suffered a 90.0-60.0 loss. Head coach Ivan Haines was impressed with the boy’s win. “Senior sprinter/jumper Jack Boomsma continues to earn wins in the long jump (19’2.25”), 400-meter relay (45.6-seconds), and 100-meter dash (11.6),” wrote Haines.
Solanco swept the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, the shot put, and the javelin. “It has been a long time since the throwers’ teams have been this strong,” said Haines, talking about both teams. Dom Messano, a sophomore, was able to pick up two wins. He earned firsts in the 800-meter run (2:09.4) and in the 1600-meter relay (3:38.2). His finish in the 800-meter was a personal best. Colin Althoff, another soph, earned wins in the 200-meter dash (24.1 seconds) and as a member of the strong 400-meter relay team. “Other bright spots were Will Paredes-Jimenez in the sprints and Angel Daniel-Morales who continues to run well in the 400-meter,” said Haines. “Ben Stickler ran a really nice race in the 1600-meter event, earning a second place finish and a personal best.” Stickler’s run was a 15 second improvement over his previous race. “What is really nice to see is the number of talented underclassmen who were able to pick up seconds and thirds,” wrote Haines. The coach said the boys were able to record 10 personal bests. “Once the warm temperature ever arrives, I am sure this team will surprise us on how well they can perform,” said Haines. The sweeps included, in addition to Boomsma, Paredes-Jimenez (11.7) and Althoff (11.8) in the 100-meter dash. In the 200-meter dash it was Althoff (24.1), Paredes-Jimenez (25.1) and Tyler Williams (25.3) finishing one, two and three. Dylan Sheaffer (46’10.25”), Logan Yaletchko (45’3”) and Alex Hindman (41’7”) led the way in the shot put; and Dylon Sturgill (133’4”), Hindman (130’10”) and Harrison Bauer (129’1”) cleaned up in the javelin event. Junior Mike Grech earned first place in the triple jump (38’3.5”), and Daniel-Morales won the 400-meter run (53.2). Sheaffer also won the discus event with a toss of 138’1”. Solanco won the 1600-meter relay behind the performances of Messano, Daniel-Morales, Grech, and Althoff (3:38.2). “The girl’s team loss was a hard fought battle,” wrote Haines. “We matched up well with them in all areas except in the jumps, which were evident in that the girls were only able to earn five points.” Haines added that it was very difficult to overcome that much of a deficit in addition to losing all the relays. But he was inspired in that the girls did not give up. “With the cold weather the girls performed well,” said Haines. “The team was led by the throwing team with each event being won by a different girl. Both Troyana Miller and Lydia Fetterman threw big personal bests for their wins, and Anna Cooney tied her personal best for the year to earn a win.” Haines said he’s anxious to see what these girls can do throughout the rest of the season, and is delighted Cooney has already qualified for District competition in the shot put event. “We are looking forward to what these girls will be doing this year,” added Haines. Besides Miller, Fetterman, and Cooney, Sophia Baker earned a first in the 100- meter hurdles (17.6), Alana Yoder won the 800-meter run (2:28.8), this after coming off an injury; and Aleksa Burger earned a first in the 200-meter dash (28.7), running her fastest time of the season. Solanco swept the javelin event with sophomore Emma Urbine (87’11”) placing second and sophomore Peyton Jennings third (83’10”) behind Fetterman. The Mules also swept the shot put field event with Miller (32’4”) and Jennings (28’9”) following Cooney. Scoring only five points in the jumps and zero points in the relays offset the domination in the throws (24.0-3.0) resulting in the 30-point loss. Comments are closed.
