by Bud Hart In a wild one at Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg took a 25-22 victory home in JV action on Monday, October 9. Leading 12-6 at the half, the Pioneers tacked on two more TDs and added two more points with successful points after. Solanco could not stop the L-S offense despite big defensive hits by Logan Shank, Chad Carter, Coleman Dow, Hunter Shaw and freshman Seth Harnish. “They flew around all game and made plays for us,” wrote assistant coach Justin Zellman in an email. Penalties also played a role on both sides of the ball.
Down 25-6 Solanco rallied in the second half, scoring two TDs. The first came in the third quarter when quarterback Grady Unger connected on a 30-yard pass to junior Jasiah Taylor (four catches, one TD). The Mules successfully went for two to lessen the margin 25-14 with 9:54 showing on the clock. The Mules second TD came with less than four minutes on the clock. Unger connected with Taylor on a long pass giving the Mules a first and ten deep in Pioneer territory. A penalty set them back, but Unger connected with a pass to Colton Peters to give Solanco a first and goal. Unger handed off to Shaneef Carter, who scored his second of two TDs, the first a 60-yard scamper to the end zone in the first half. Aaron Combs ran the pigskin in for two to make the score 25-22. The Mules attempted to regain control of the ball with two-minutes left on the clock, but L-S successfully moved the chains into Solanco territory and finally took a knee to end the game. While the coaching staff was disappointed when the rally fell short, the coaches’ praised the offensive line. “The line as a whole played well,” noted Zellman. “We rotate offensive lineman on JV and that’s why there’s more than your usual five.” The seven linemen named included Jeff Orlip, Nate Butler, Josiah Reimold, Spencer Burrell, David Hileman, Daulton Myers and Shank. The next two home games are scheduled for October 23 (Ephrata) and October 30 (Manheim Central) with a 4 p.m. kickoff. Comments are closed.
