by Bud Hart Going into the season coach Tony Mendez knew the season would be a challenge. “We are lacking experience,” wrote Mendez. “We lost seven seniors last year and with that lost a lot of experience. Losing Jackson Houghton doesn’t help as well.” The sophomore was nursing an injured hand and returned later in the week. The Solanco wrestling team hosted Penn Manor on Tuesday, Dec. 18, suffering a 39-24 loss. The Mules picked up wins at the 113 pound weight class on a 2:28 pin by Dominic Flatt. “Dominic bumped up to 113 in order to wrestle and pinned his opponent,” added Mendez. Manor had no 106-pound opponent. Chase Charles won by a 7-6 decision at 126 and Joey Vandegriff eked out a 9-8 decision at 132, but it was all Penn Manor from there as the Comets ran the table from 138 through 170.
Penn Manor won six consecutive bouts, four by fall, with two pins coming in less than a minute. The visitors did forfeit to Solanco’s Nick Yannutz (195) and Nate Neuhauser (285) to give the Mules an additional 12 points. With the win Penn Manor remains atop the Section I race, tied with Conestoga Valley and Warwick. The Mules continue to await their first league win. “The team just needs to keep working hard and improve each match on the small mistakes” noted Mendez. “Every practice and every match is an opportunity to improve.” Mules nip Cocalico Joey Vandegriff (132) won by fall in the final bout to lift the Solanco wrestling team to a 32-31 triumph over Cocalico Thursday night. Nathanael Neuhauser (285) scored a pin. Ronnie Fulton (138) prevailed by tech fall. Jackson Houghton (120) won in overtime, 9-7. Reshawn Carter (170) and Nick Yannutz (195) each triumphed by decision. Dominic Flatt (106) received a forfeit. Comments are closed.
