Lampeter-Strasburg 2 It all came together for the Solanco volleyball team and the result was a dramatic five-set victory over visiting Lampeter-Strasburg Wednesday night, October 16. The Mules celebrated Senior Night with a 16-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 15-9 win. "That made it all worth it," Solanco coach Meghan Cross said. "That's how they can play volleyball. They know how to play the game. Everything was in the system and they made it work." The two teams split the first two sets before Solanco squandered a lead in the third set and the Pioneers came back to take command of the match. "It was tough but since it was a close loss we just told ourselves to just bring it from the beginning," said Solanco senior Molinarez, who was playing her last home match. "We tell that to ourselves all the time and that's what we try to do. Teammates support you. They bring you back up. They tell you it's ok if you miss. It's all worth it at the end." Undaunted, the Mules rebounded to force a decisive fifth set. "We had a really good pep talk and then they knew when they came out of that game they had to play with the energy they started that set with," said Cross. "There was no time to let the bottom drop out. We talked about it. They knew what they needed to do and did it. They were focused tonight." The fifth game formula is simple. It's imperative to start fast and limit mistakes. That's exactly what Solanco did. Nathaly Molinarez had a kill on the first point then Emma Canale's block made it 2-0. L-S won four of the next five points to go ahead 4-3 before the Mules responded with a four-point run to take the lead for good. Canale contributed a kill to cap a long rally. Anya Fisher put the ball away after an L-S overpass. Maggie Perry provided an ace and Fisher and Cheyanne Cutler combined for a block. Solanco extended its advantage to 13-8 on an ace by senior Alondra Quinonez and went on to the victory. "We were making them make the errors instead of us making the errors," said Cross. "That's important because there's no room for silly mistakes in a 15-point game. We cut back on the unforced errors. They had me worried in the first set but then they cleaned it up." Molinarez led the Mules with six kills and added eight digs. Canale collected five blocks and Cutler and Fisher each chipped in two. Quinonez led the team with six aces and 17 digs. Perry and Madi Davis each had 11 digs, Kate Unger handed out eight assists. Seniors Molinarez, Quinonez, and Lilli Urbschat were honored prior to the match. "Right before I cannot even tell you how nervous I was," Molinarez said. "At the same time, I was so calmed because I knew this was going to be my last game right here and I wouldn't want to play with anyone else. This is my team. This has always been my team. And this will always be my team." Playing in front of a lot of friends and family inspired Molinarez and her teammates. "We had a lot of people supporting us," Molinarez said. "I had my parents and they don't get to do this all the time so I was so thankful they were here. They were pushing me and we're here to push each other. And at the end of the day, it's a game and we're here to have fun but we're also here to win and we just proved that." Solanco 3, Berks Christian 1 The Mules recorded its third win of the year by besting Berks Christian 25-19, 20-25, 25-10, 25-10 Monday night, October 14. "We played a little bit tighter defense and had better passing which allowed us to get some more hits," Solanco coach Meghan Cross said. "They were playing better as a team." Nathaly Molinarez led the Mules with 15 kills and added five aces and five digs. Emma Canale collected seven kills and a team-high six blocks. Jada Dow delivered five kills. Madi Davis posted seven aces and 10 assists. Alondra Quinonez had four aces and a team-best eight digs. Karleigh Good chipped in six digs and Kate Unger notched five assists. "They were playing what we've been practicing and I put some of our younger players in to give them some experience with passing and some on the front row. I had a chance to do some of that," said Cross. "Karleigh Good came in on the back row. She was passing well for us and digging. Maggie Perry was digging well and Alondra Quinonez was passing for us, too. It makes a difference when you get that good passing. Your setter's not running all over the place. We were able to play the game. We did have some silly mistakes but once we got into a tempo we were able to keep it going and work through for a win." Comments are closed.
