By Bud Hart Solanco's cross country teams opened their season at home on Tuesday, September 5, with the boys defeating Lebanon 15-55 and losing to McCaskey 19-38. The girls defeated Lebanon 15-55, and suffered a 15-46 loss to the Tornado. Ben Stickler led the way for the Mules placing second at the 17:56 mark. They were Christian Stead (20:02), Colin Althoff (20:12), Damian Martinez (20:13), Aiden McBride (20:14), Dan Keller (20:15), and Marty Grawe (20:17).
Eight other Mules completed the course: Jose Serrano-Silva (21:01), Evan Hastings (21:43), Josh Herr (21:47), Brandon Daniel (21:52), Lance Workman (22:05), Angel Daniel (22:08), and Thomas Steinhauer (22:15). “We have been pleased with our depth so far this year, but we have a ways to go to compete in Section 1,” said head coach Craig Ausel in a recent email. “The improvement of this group over the whole season will be a giant key to our late season success.” Junior co-captain Stickler established himself as the fourth fastest Solanco runner covering the Mule course. He is surpassed by former Mule runners Liam Hodgson, John Ausel, and Noah Brady. Sophomore Hannah Sweda led the way for Solanco girls finishing sixth with a time of 22:34. Aubree Roop finished seventh (22:48), Sarah Snyder 10th (25:15), Sarah Sweda 11th (25:45), Alyssa Slickers 12th (25:47), and Anna Stickler 13th (26:29). Also competing for the Mules were Chesley Ledsma (26:57), Danielle Drumm (27:42), Kirsten O’Connell (27:57), and Evelyn Billings (28:30). “We demonstrate a mixture of youth and experience,” said Ausel. “They will grow stronger each week and will show great improvement as the season moves forward.” On Saturday, September 2, the Mules competed in the 19th Annual Bear Mountain River Run hosted by Lock Haven University. The boys finished fifth in a field of 20 teams and the girls ended at 16th. Leading the way for the boy’s was Stickler (16:20), who placed 11th. Stickler’s time was a career best. The girls were without one of its top runners, who failed to compete due to a bad cold. Coach Ausel took eight runners from both teams to compete at the invitational. “This is a very flat and fast course,” wrote Ausel. “Our squads fought hard in the rain to run very strong races.” The Mules will travel to Neffsville on Tuesday, September 12, as Manheim Township hosts the next Section 1 cross country meet.
