by Bud Hart Host Solanco shut out the visiting Cocalico Eagles field hockey team 2-0 on Monday afternoon, October 2, revenging a 2-0 defeat in Denver earlier in the season. The Mules scored first at the 5:25 in first half when Jada Brown connected on an assist by Keirra Laird. Holding on to the slim lead, Laird entered the scoring ranks with a goal at the 11:41 mark of the second half on an assist off the stick of Abby Stull.
The visitors were awarded five penalty shots to the home team’s three and took 10 shots on goal to Solanco’s nine. Cocalico’s goalkeeper, Summer Haldeman was credited with seven saves, while Solanco’s Alta Brandenberger totaled 10. “It was a big win for the Mules,” wrote head coach Whitney Hawkins in an email. “We were in a little of a slump and to win was a great feeling for many of the girls. I looked back and we actually lost 3-2 to them earlier.” We started off great and played excellent with small passing, communicating and moving the ball up the field as a unit,” said Hawkins. “Second half we went a little laid back compared to the first. We pulled together and I told the girls they need to play like the scores 0-0 and time were running out.” Hawkins praised sophomore forward Keirra Laird. “She's only a sophomore, great speed up the sides. Before I subbed her on both times I told her I need her speed and stick work - and she needs to be hungry for a goal - and she did just that with an assist and a goal,” said the head coach. “I am very excited to see how she progresses through the year. She's a great athlete and her hard work is paying off for her.” The Mules traveled to Ephrata on Wednesday, October 4, and fell 3-0 on three first-half Mountaineer goals. The teams tied on corner penalty shots each with six. Ephrata out shot Solanco 16-11. Alta Brandenberger was credited with 13 saves. Comments are closed.
