by Bud Hart Elizabethtown’s Mackenzie Hommaker scored a goal in each half as the Bears defeated the Mules, 2-0 in the pasture on Monday, September 11. Hommaker’s first goal came late, at the 1:30 mark of the first half on an assist from Sharri Kambesis, who again set up Hommaker at the 9:15 mark of the second half. “Going in this week we are trying to refocus our attention on playing our own game,” wrote head coach Whitney Hawkins. “The girls played well yesterday, a very hard fought game. I’m excited to meet up with E-town again later this season and see how we do on their turf.”
The Bears were awarded five penalty corner shots to the Mules three and took 12 shots on goal to the Mules three. While two of those Bear shots led to scores, Coach Hawkins was pleased with her goalkeepers play. “I felt the goalkeeper, Alta Brandenberger, had a great game,” added Hawkins. “Two losses in a row can really get inside player’s heads, especially a goalie because they are a huge component of the team. Alta continued to push through the games and always asks post-game and pre-game questions on what the coaches feel she should focus and work on for the specific game, so she can do the best she can.” The coach said her 10 saves were huge. “Many of them were with a reverse chip, which can be difficult for a goalie to read,” wrote the coach. “The ball’s going to fly on the reverse depending how the player angles or doesn’t angle her stick. Alta had great complete clears out of the circle. It is awesome to see how much she has been growing from game to game.” In another heartbreaker, Ephrata’s Meg Mahlandt scored at the 10:16 mark of overtime to give visiting Ephrata a 3-2 win on Friday, September 15. Mahlandt scored the first goal for Ephrata with Riannah Neufid adding another as time ran out in regulation. Solanco’s Autumn Aukamp and Keirra Laird led the way for the Mules, each knocking in the ball for scores. Both Solanco scores came on assists from Abby Stull. Penalty corners went to Ephrata, 5-4, as did shots on goal, 15 versus 10. The Mule goalkeeper was credited with 12 saves. Comments are closed.
