The Solanco girls soccer team bounced back from a disappointing defeat by pulling out a victory in the final five minutes. Alana Yoder scored in the 75th minute to lift the Mules to a 2-1 triumph over host Kennett Saturday morning. Meg Bailey beat a defender down the left side of the field and played a ball across the goal to Yoder. Bailey scored the game's first goal in the fourth minute after taking a nifty through ball from Yoder. "It was a hot day and overall the girls played well," said coach Ken Yoder, whose team was hampered by injuries. "We have a huge week [this week] and have to find a way to get these girls healthy." Solanco travels to Donegal Tuesday night and hosts McCaskey Wednesday, Octorarara Friday, and Oxford Saturday morning at 10. The Mules lost 5-0 to a talented, physical Elco squad Thursday, September 19. Mike Tyson once famously quipped, 'Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." That's sort of what happened to Solanco. The Mules planned to use man marking against Elco's top scorer in an attempt to frustrate the visitors. That strategy never materialized as Elco scored off a corner kick 1:52 into the game. "We came in with a game plan and had something we thought might work," Ken Yoder said. "It kind of got thrown out the window with an early goal. It's just tough. They're a powerful, physical team that executes well and they ran us off the field, quite honestly." Elco won a majority of the 50-50 head balls and employed an aggressive style of play the Mules could not duplicate. "They're one of the more physical teams in the league," Yoder said. "We knew that coming in and we were going to try to initiate some of that or play through some of that. But we're a young team and we're learning. They had their way with us. They dominated in every facet of the game, including heart and wanting it more. They obviously did. So it was a little frustrating." Elco added another 1:11 after the first goal and had a three-goal cushion at halftime before tacking on a pair of goals in the second half. Solanco 2, Lancaster Mennonite 1 (OT) Meg Bailey tallied twice to lead the Mules over visiting Lancaster Mennonite Monday night, September 16. Bailey scored the equalizer four minutes into the second half on a rebound of an Alana Yoder shot and put home the game-winner eight minutes into the extra session. "We had a really nice build in overtime," Ken Yoder said. "The ball got swung out to Nikki Trout on the outside. Nikki played a ball to Grace Unger in the middle. Grace faked a shot and instead of where we normally might shoot the ball, she made that one extra pass and Meg was crashing the goal on the far side and made a beautiful shot. That was a highlight for us this season. It was a good one but we got served back down to earth [against Elco]." Gabi Dolan made three saves. Lancaster Mennonite had taken the lead with 28:39 left in the first half when Kendra Cornell connected on a shot from 40 yards out. Solanco JV football routs Garden Spot Solanco's JV football team stormed out to a 46-point halftime lead and pummeled visiting Garden Spot 54-0 Monday, September 16.
Weston Bare returned an interception 65 yards for a TD on the second play from scrimmage. Zach Turpen's two-point conversion made it 8-0 68 seconds into the game. After the Spartans mishandled a low punt snap, Elijah Reimold scored from two yards out for a 14-0 advantage. Bare picked off another pass on the next possession but the Mules could not capitalize. Following another poor punt snap, Turpen scored on a three-yard run and added the two-point conversion for a 22-0 cushion. Jacob Smolik's interception set up a 48-yard TD jaunt and two-point conversion by Turpen. Smolik also had a fumble recovery. Turpen tacked on another TD and two-point conversion to pad the margin to 38-0. Shayne Towner recovered a fumble and Reimold scored from seven yards away. Brian Coleman added the two-point conversion to make it 46-0 with 2:04 left in the first half. Brian Slocum's 28-yard TD jaunt and Coleman conversion capped the scoring. Comments are closed.
