by Bud Hart Solano girls head soccer coach Ken Yoder said he was pleased with his team's performance against three tough opponents last week. On Friday, October 5, the Mules hosted Elco, who has not lost a game in the section. “With three time defending MVP Ryelle Shuey coming to play, one of our main focuses was to shut her down and not allowing her to beat us,” said Yoder. “Alana Yoder played her toe-to-toe and did an amazing job of keeping her out of the scoring column.”
After a physical first half ended in a 0-0 tie, Elco finally cracked the scoring column with a ball that was bouncing around in the Solanco box and the Mules were unable to clear it. Elco tallied two more goals towards the end of the game and left the pasture with a 3-0 victory. “The game was a very physical one, and I felt we matched up with them pretty well,” said Yoder. “We played a man-to-man defense and we were able to hold them in check for a while. They’re the best team in the section; I was proud of the way our girls battled.” Lancaster Mennonite came to Quarryville on Wednesday, October 3. Before the game got underway, Solanco honored senior players Reece Curry-Saner, Grace Kreider, Rachel McLaren, and Diana Quintino. “These girls have done so much for the program and all of them will be missed greatly,” said Yoder. Following the recognition, Yoder scored first on a header from Krieder’s corner. That gave the Mules a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Mennonite answered shortly after that to tie the score at 1-1. “Again, I thought we were getting the better of the play, and playing the best defense,” noted Yoder. “We had chances to score that we just could not convert on. The score ended 1-1 after regulation and the game went to overtime.” A minute into the second overtime, Mennonite put one into the box and the game ended with a 2-1 double overtime win. The Mules and Cocalico's Eagles played an a very evenly matched game before Cocalico scored three goals to win 3-0 at Solanco on October 1. “Both teams got a couple really good chances to score, and they converted on pretty much all of their attempts while we did not,” said Yoder. “This week was a big week for us. We had three tough section opponents. We lost very close away games to all three opponents earlier in the season, and were looking to turn that around.” Comments are closed.
