The Solanco girls basketball team won two of three games last week. Saturday's game at Daniel Boone was postponed. A makeup date has not yet been set. Solanco 66, Octorara 22 Paige Phillips scored 11 of her team-high 14 points in the first quarter and added four steals. Ilynd Rapant recorded 11 points and six rebounds and Jade Eshelman notched nine points and seven rebounds. Jenna Dombach delivered six points and six assists and Angela Cylc contributed six points. Twelve different Mules scored. The Mules led 26-7 at the end of the first quarter and 51-17 at halftime. "In the second half we had the opportunity to get everyone into the game and get on court experience," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said.
Solanco won the JV game 39-9. Jenna Ehlers led the Mules with nine points and Piper Graham and Arianna Seiberlich each added seven. Manheim Central 46, Solanco 41 Manheim Central led most of the way to win a first place battle over the host Solanco girls basketball team Tuesday night, January 14. The Barons took the lead for good late in the first quarter and sealed the deal by making their final 11 free throws. Manheim Central is a game ahead of Solanco in the Section Three standings with six league games left. "We still control a lot of things," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "We're going to get them again (January 30). We'll play them again up at their place. They're a good ball club." The Mules took their first and only edge at 8-7 on a three-point play by Jade Eshelman with 3:29 to go in the first quarter. Central scored the last three points of the period and the first seven of the second quarter to take a 17-8 advantage. "They took away some of our outside shots," McDowell said. "They did a good job face-guarding. They run a 2-3 matchup zone that they guard the shooters out of it. I thought they did a real good job, especially early in the game. We didn't make shots early on that we needed to make. They gave us some real good open looks and we didn't take advantage of that early, especially in the second quarter when they made their run. That was crucial because if we make a couple baskets in that stretch, it's a whole different ballgame. They had Jenna well-scouted. They had Paige well-scouted. They were able to limit them." Manheim Central led 26-17 at halftime and were hanging on to a nine-point bulge before Alana Yoder hit a jumper with 21 seconds left in the third quarter and Arianna Seiberlich hit a free throw six seconds later. Eshelman, who paced the Mules with 13 points, began the fourth quarter with a basket to cut the deficit down to four but picked up her fourth foul with 6:45 remaining. Solanco trimmed the margin to four one other time when Phillips nailed a three-pointer to make it 34-30 with 3:09 to play. But the Barons, who came into the game shooting about 50 percent from the charity stripe, hit 16 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter. "Just like last year, we have to continue to control what we can control and hope some things happen between now and then," said McDowell. "Right now, we're still sitting in a good spot. We're a young team, still learning, still trying to push ahead. We'll keep grinding at them. That's what we do." Solanco won the JV game 34-28. Olivia Lasko led the Mules with nine points and Hannah Wood chipped in eight. Solanco 40, Lampeter-Strasburg 33 The Mules earned a crucial comeback win at Lampeter-Strasburg Monday, January 13. Trailing 24-20 entering the fourth quarter, Solanco doubled its output over the final eight minutes. "It was a real good win against a good team," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "It's always fun to beat L-S." Nikki Trout and Jenna Dombach each tallied 10 points. Paige Phillips added eight. Jade Eshelman recorded five points and 14 rebounds. Sammi Jackson had four points and four boards. Angela Cylc chipped in three points. "Angela did a great job in the post when Jade had some foul trouble early on," said McDowell. "Angela's defense and inside presence helped limit L-S's opportunities to score. Angela did a great job protecting the rim. Also in the second half we went with double bigs and Jade and Angela played well together which was an added bonus to our defense." "Sammi Jackson was a spark off the bench," McDowell added. "Sammi did an outstanding job. She scored, she rebounded, she made great passes, and she played defense. She was a difference-maker in a great team win." L-S won the JV game 36-23. Arianna Seiberlich supplied seven for the Mules and Olivia Lasko added six. Comments are closed.
