The Solanco girls basketball team struggled on offense last week, losing three of four games. The Mules lost 50-38 to host York Country Day Saturday night. "It was pretty competitive for most of the game," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "We had a little lull in the third quarter." The Mules trailed by three at halftime before being outscored 8-2 in the third quarter. "That was pretty much the game right there," said McDowell."
Solanco stayed within striking distance for the first part of the fourth quarter before being forced to foul in an effort to narrow the gap. Haley Conklin paced the Mules with 12 points and four steals. Rachel Trout collected eight points, six rebounds and two steals. Megan Yannutz added eight points and four boards. Cayla Robinson recorded four points and three rebounds. Taylor Stitz had four points and six boards and Jen Eberly chipped in two points and eight rebounds. The game was played in York Country Day's charming, intimate gym with the benches and bleachers right next to the sidelines. "The girls handled it well," said McDowell. "It was an atmosphere they weren't used to playing in. It was a neat experience." Solanco suffered a 45-19 setback to Conestoga Valley last Thursday. "We struggled to score," said McDowell. "We had a lot of opportunities but we just weren't making our shots. Defensively we played well but we just couldn't put the ball in the basket." The Mules trailed 8-2 at the end of the first quarter and 21-3 at halftime. "We were missing layups, foul shots, jumpers," said McDowell. "It was just one of those nights." Solanco made 6 of its 51 field goal attempts (12 percent). Sarah Frawley led the Mules with five points, all coming in the final three minutes. Yannutz had four points and seven rebounds. Stitz provided four points and 12 rebounds. Trout had two points, five steals and three rebounds. Conklin added two points and three steals and Nikki Boultinghouse had two points. Elizabethtown edged Solanco 45-40 Tuesday, January 20. The Bears took charge by outscoring the Mules 8-3 in the second quarter. "We always seem to have one rough quarter," said McDowell. "We put three quarters together but we have a quarter where we fall behind." Solanco trailed 39-31 entering the fourth quarter and didn't get closer than four the rest of the way. Robinson hit 8 of 10 from the free throw line and finished with a team-high 14 points. Trout provided 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. Conklin contributed nine points, nine rebounds, four steals and two assists. Yannutz supplied four points and five boards. Boultinghouse had two points and three boards. Stitz registered four rebounds and Eberly added three rebounds and two assists. On Monday, January 19, Solanco upended Penn Manor 37-26. The Mules led 13-9 at the end of the first half. "I was a little concerned about Penn Manor's size," said McDowell. "We played some zone and did a really good job of limiting their second opportunities." The coach said Yannutz, Stitz and Eberly "did a great job defensively in the post". Solanco salted the game away by making 6 of 10 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. Trout recorded 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Yannutz added six points and five rebounds. Conklin notched seven points, three rebounds and two assists. Eberly scored five points. Stitz had two points, five rebounds and three steals. "It was a particularly meaningful game for the Mules. Penn Manor coach Scott Long and McDowell both teach at Smith Middle School. They are good friends and Long has helped mentor Solanco's first-year coach. "Scott has done a lot for me," McDowell said. "It was neat coaching against a good friend and colleague." McDowell didn't use the friendship to motivate the Solanco players but they sensed it was a special game. Said McDowell: "Haley Conklin came up to me before the game and said, 'We know their coach is a good friend. We'll win the game for you'."
