The Solanco football team did not look past McCaskey. With a challenging stretch of games looming, the Mules (5-2) took care of business Friday night, gradually pulling away from the winless Red Tornado for a 39-13 triumph. Special teams played a big role again as Mason St. Clair returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second time this season.
Nick Yannutz gained 122 yards on 19 attempts and scored a touchdown. Ronnie Fulton rushed seven times for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Grady Unger gained 61 yards on 10 carries, ran for a score, and tossed a TD pass to Rashawn Carter. Solanco struck first on a seven-yard scamper by Fulton with 4:16 left in the opening quarter. McCaskey cut their deficit in half with a 37-yard field goal. With 7:54 to go in the second quarter, Unger upped the lead to 12-3 on a two-yard plunge one play after he ran for 22 yards. Yannutz scored from 14 yards out to make it 18-3 4:04 before halftime. After McCaskey's second field goal of the night, St. Clair returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a score to pad the margin to 26-6. "Any time you can score on special teams it's a momentum builder," Solanco coach Tony Cox said. "Mason has done a great job of just filling the hole. He hits it full tilt. That's what we've been telling him to do and he does exactly as he's coached." Said St. Clair: "It's all about the blocking. It takes the whole team to get it down there. It's all about the team." St. Clair also returned a kick for a TD in the Mules' win over New Oxford. "You've just got to keep your eyes wide open, look around, read the blocks, and just go for it," said St. Clair. Solanco extended its lead to 32-6 on the first possession of the second half as Unger hit Carter for a 25-yard scoring strike on 3rd and 7. Following a McCaskey touchdown, Fulton scooted 20 yards for a TD on 4th and 13 to ice it with 7:44 left. Solanco turns its attention to its final three regular season games – all against difficult foes. Before hosting both Cocalico and Manheim Central, the Mules travel to Lampeter-Strasburg. "It's the Milk Jug," said Cox. "I feel like it's a big rival game for us with L-S. They're our next door neighbors. I think our kids, our seniors, understand the importance of the Milk Jug. I told them I'm not ready for it to go anywhere else but Solanco." "This week we've got to play as hard as we can, get prepared," St. Clair said. "It's the biggest game of the year for us."
