Solanco 2, Spring Grove 1 Kayla McCauley scored a goal and assisted on Emma Curtis' overtime game-winner Saturday morning, September 28. Kimmy Beacham made nine saves for the Mules. Maggie Hirst thought perhaps her eyes were deceiving her. In fact, Hirst had scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Solanco field hockey team to a 1-0 triumph over visiting McCaskey Thursday, September 26. "I kind of thought it wasn't real. It always happens like that, like it's not a goal," said Hirst. "But it was. I just got really happy and excited that we finally won because it was a long game." Hirst took a pass from Mylee Smith and scored with 5:46 left in the extra session. "Mylee was dribbling it up," Hirst said. "I thought she was going to pass it sooner but she didn't, which was really good. I'm glad that she didn't. I didn't think it was going to go in but then it did. It was good." The Mules dominated the game but could not convert on any of their 19 corner opportunities. "I know that they're trying. Maybe we need to work on them more," Solanco coach Whitney Hawkins said. "We kind of pulled back from [practicing] corners because we were scoring on all the corners so I thought our corners are good. So maybe that was my fault from a coaching aspect to not emphasize it as much. You know they're in there working, trying to do their best." Hirst said failing to score on so many chances gets irritating. "It gets really frustrating, especially when I miss it," she said. "It doesn't get too frustrating when someone else misses it because I think, 'Oh yeah. I've been there. I've done that.' But when I continuously miss it I get really frustrated at myself." It was the second time the Mules posted an overtime win over McCaskey. In between, Solanco has lost several close games. "My blood pressure is really high," Hawkins said. "I think it's rewarding because we talked about how we've only lost by one to two goals and it's stressful when you know you're there. We talked about what we can do now that we're halfway through the season. We know what the other teams are going to do now. Unfortunately, we're going to be on turf for a lot of them but I think it's a real motivation for them because we had lost a couple in a row." Said Hirst: "It really helps with your mental thinking, that we won a game, now we're at the top of our game. You feel like you're going to win another one and keep scoring. Because when you lose, you get in a slump and it keeps going." Cocalico downed the Mules 3-1 Tuesday, September 24. Becca Bruno scored for Solanco. Comments are closed.
