With a 64-46 win in a crossover game with the Donegal Indians, the Mules opened their 2018-19 league season at Mount Joy, on Friday, December 14. Leading 30-25 at the half, Solanco outscored the home team 34-21 in the second half of play to win handily. The Mules were led by Dawson Kreider and Zach Wiker who scored 15 and 14 points respectively. Solanco drained nine baskets from beyond the three-point arc with Wiker connecting on four of the total. Zed Baker added nine points, Carson Kilgore eight, Dom Messano seven, Colesen Shaeffer six, Jalen Henry three and Tyler Whisman two.
“As usual, Kreider led us in scoring with 15 points, while Wiker added 14 points,” said head coach Scott Long. “Baker, Kilgore, Messano and Shaeffer each had key baskets down the stretch for us.” Coach Long said Kilgore was particularly good on the boards, posting a career high 12 rebounds. Going into league play the Mules were 0-4. “We wanted our guys to be positive and confident, knowing that league play was just beginning and everyone was 0-0,” wrote Long. “The guys bought into that idea and came out Friday night at Donegal and played hard.” Long added that he was proud of the way the Mules fought after not having the success they wanted previously. “We made some minor adjustments to our defensive scheme and it seemed to work well for us,” noted Long. “Our plan moving forward is to continue to play fast and aggressive on offense, and limit the other team’s ability to penetrate on us when we defend our basket.” On Thursday, December 13, at home, the Mules lost to the Ephrata Mountaineers by a 62-49 nod in a non-league game. Long said the Mules were inconsistent in execution on both ends of the floor. Ephrata held a 31-23 advantage at the break, and never trailed. Kreider led the way for the Mules with 14 points, including four treys. Wiker connected for 12 points, with another four three-point goals. Baker added nine points, Kilgore eight, Messano seven, Shaeffer six, Henry three and Whisman two. Tuesday, December 11, in another non-league contest, Solanco lost to a good Elizabethtown team by a 67-43 margin. “E-town jumped out on us early and we had a hard time closing the game,” said Long. “Our guys fought very hard in the second quarter to keep it close.” Late in third quarter Solanco got to within eight, but were unable to score with the Bears extending their lead to 13. “We were led in scoring by Messano (10 points) and Baker (9 points),” added Long. Whisman added six to the ledger, Henry and Shaeffer adding five. Both Kreider and Kilgore scored three points. Jordan Rush netted a bucket for two. Baker and Shaeffer were perfect at the line, two for two. Comments are closed.
