The Solanco boys basketball team's losing streak is up to 11 following three losses last week. Octorara 61, Solanco 52 Zed Baker led the Mules with 16 points and Colesen Sheaffer supplied 13. Ryan Smith scored 11 and Tyler Burger chipped in eight. Solanco eclipsed the 50-point plateau for the second time all season but Octorara pulled away late. Manheim Central 62,
Solanco 46 Colesen Sheaffer and Ryan Smith each scored nine and Zed Baker and Marty Grawe both supplied seven. Lampeter-Strasburg 75, Solanco 49 The visiting Pioneers raced to a huge early lead and cruised to a lopsided victory over the Mules (2-12) Monday night, January 13. Solanco coach David Long disputed a notion that the final score reflected the talent disparity. "That's on paper what it looks like," he said. "I think we made a lot of mistakes early. I think our biggest thing is consistency. And I think sometimes we see the names of schools that have beat us in the past. They're a good team, They're very talented. I'm not saying that. But what I'm saying is we hear what their name is before we see the players in the jerseys and we just assume a certain outcome. It's almost like we're afraid to just consistently do the same thing. We had some success early, after we made a few mistakes, where we finally got the ball to the middle of their zone, looked opposite like we try to do, instead of finding the solution and doing it, doing it, doing it, we find the solution once and then we scatter-brain and lose the focus to do the same thing over and over again. I think it's a lot less of a big answer we need to find. I think it's kind of right in front of us. Can we do the same thing over and over again? I think it's more boring than our guys understand. Getting to that successful place is just consistency." After L-S scored the game's first four points, Solanco's Colesen Sheaffer hit a three-pointer. Taking advantage of a fullcourt trapping defense, the Pioneers proceeded to tally 16 straight points to seize command. L-S buried four three-pointers to take a 27-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Solanco has been susceptible to fullcourt pressure all season and has struggled to rectify the issues, in part because practice time is scarce during the season. The L-S contest was in the middle of a stretch of five games in seven days. The Mules' first-year coach knows Solanco needs to handle the ball better. "It's something we worked on a good bit over the summer," said Long. "I would love for more practice time. I think that they should extend the season a little more because we're just jam-packed with games all the time. I think it's something we worked on over the summer but I think it's just a different level when you see it against another varsity. That's been hurting us a little bit." Solanco came alive in the second quarter and actually outscored L-S 20-17 to go into halftime trailing 44-25. But the early deficit was insurmountable for a Solanco team that has scored more than 50 points in a game one time all season. "Scoring has definitely been our problem," Long said. "That's a big focus that we're going to take over the summer. It's just developing a little more natural scoring. I think everything we do right now has to be manufactured. That's tough. We go down 10 and we score 40 most games, that's a big deficit." L-S began the second half by making it a point to work the ball down low to burly sophomore center Nick DelGrande. DelGrande had eight points in the Pioneers' 13-2 spurt as the lead ballooned to 30. Comments are closed.
