by Bud Hart The Golden Mules closed out their 2016-17 regular season at home on Wednesday, January 25, with a 50-18 win over the Hempfield Black Knights. The Knights ended their season failing to win a league match. Following Mule wins by forfeit at 220 to Kaleb Tucker and 106 to Thomas Steinhauer, Hempfield’s Jared Loose and Solanco’s Sheldon Peiffer hooked up in a good one at 120. Loose, a 2015-16 state qualifier bested the Mule junior by a well-earned 5-0 decision. “I was very pleased with Sheldon’s effort,” said head coach John Little. “That was a great match.”
Solanco won the next seven of nine bouts. Chase Charles (126) by fall (2:53), Joey Vandegriff (132) by major decision (13-0), Grayson Charles (138) by major decision (9-0), A.J. Wilson (152) by forfeit, Ben Root (170) by fall (:20), Nick Yannutz (182) by fall (3:13) and Josh Weder (195) by fall (2:29). Tucker Pierson (160) nearly made it eight of nine bouts losing by a 2-1 decision to Hempfield’s Ian Edwards. Coach Little said his team was down this year, finishing with a 4-3 league record (5-3 overall). “We’re young and inexperienced,” he said. However, Little was impressed by some of the team’s success on this occasion. “I was pleased that Nick (Yannutz) really went after his opponent tonight,” said the coach. “Joey (Vandegriff) really looked tough tonight and wrestled well and Ben (Root) was ill for the past two days and pins his man in 20 seconds.” Entering the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament scheduled to be held at Garden Spot High School on Friday and Saturday, January 27 and 28, the Mules had six wrestlers seeded among the top five. Grayson Charles (138) and Root (170) were named first seeds. Tucker (220) was the second seed, with Wilson (152) and Weder (195) third seeds. Sheldon Peiffer (120) was seeded fifth. All Solanco wrestlers seeded medaled at the tournament, but only Root won a championship. Charles and Weder earned silver and Wilson and Tucker bronze. Peiffer finished eighth after suffering a Friday night shoulder injury that hampered his performance on the mat Saturday. Comments are closed.
