Joey Davis captured an individual title at 138 pounds to help the Solanco wrestling team finish fourth at the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships Saturday at Garden Spot. In the finals, Davis posted an 8-3 victory over Josh Renninger of Annville-Cleona. Davis had advanced to the title match with two falls and a major decision. Seven more Mules finished in the Top 8. Chase Charles (126) and Wyatt Jennings (145) both placed second. Charles lost 4-1 to Joe Lobeck of Lancaster Catholic. Jennings dropped an 8-5 decision in the latest installment of his rivalry with Manheim Township's Victor Kenderdine.
Josh Weder was third at 195 pounds. He lost in the semis to undefeated Jesse Kann of the Penn Manor, the eventual champion, and then won consecutive matches in the consolations. Ben Root (170) finished fourth, Kody Hart (152) was fifth, Sheldon Peiffer (106) finished seventh, and Hunter Smith (182) placed eighth. Northern Lebanon (237.5) won the 22-team tournament followed by Manheim Central (182), Penn Manor (174), Solanco (151.5), Cocalico (146), Warwick (118), McCaskey (117), Garden Spot (116), Conestoga Valley (97), Annville-Cleona (86), Ephrata (83), ELCO (80), Lampeter-Strasburg (80), Manheim Township (71), Pequea Valley (66), Hempfield (59.5), Elizabethtown (45.5), Lebanon (44), Lancaster Catholic (38.5), Cedar Crest (36), Columbia (22), and Donegal (20). Solanco secured its seventh straight section title outright with a 52-15 triumph over visiting Warwick last Thursday. Weder got the Mules off to a good start with a 5-1 triumph over Josh Miller. Warwick won the next two bouts to go up 9-3 before Peiffer downed Mateo Chacon 5-2. Solanco forfeited to Devin Schnupp and then proceeded to capture the final nine contests. Chase Charles prevailed by tech fall and Grayson Charles posted a pin. AJ Wilson (132) upended Brock Lieberman, 9-2. In what Little called the big match of the night, Davis pinned Ben Hershey in 3:11. Owen Stull (145) and Jennings both won a major decision. Hart, Smith, and Root each triumphed by fall. "I believe the guys were on and up for this match," coach John Little said. "They were extremely focused and executed their moves with great precision. It was a fun night. Everything went our way. What a feat for this team to have won another Section One title." It is Solanco's 15th section title. The Mules also prevailed in 1971, 1972, 1984, 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Solanco will not be participating in the district team tournament for the second straight year. The Mules were a perfect 6-0 in dual meets, but teams are required to wrestle a minimum of eight dual meets to qualify. "That rule came into play two seasons ago," Little said. "We elected to go with our tournament schedule over scheduling more dual meets. Next year we will have two more matches in Section One which will qualify us." Comments are closed.
