by Bud Hart According to junior varsity baseball coach, John Girvin, Mother Nature has been cruel to the Lancaster-Lebanon Baseball League. “All non-league games have been postponed and the opening day was delayed three days,” wrote Girvin. “The team practiced twice on an actual field going into the first game.” On Friday, April 6, the Mules hosted the Elizabethtown Bears. Freshman Mitchell Moyer was the Friday afternoon starter for the host Mules. Moyer gave up an unearned run in the top of the first on a dropped fly ball giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
The visitors tacked on two more runs in the top of the second. With the score 3-0 Bears, the Mules attempted a comeback in the bottom of the fourth. Grady Unger singled and Nate Butler doubled with Unger stopping at third. Both scored when Moyer helped his own cause with a two-run single. In the fifth, the teams combined to score nine runs. E-town tallied four on three hits and five Mule miscues. Trailing 7-2, the Mules scored five of their own. Garrett Worthington and Nic Jones walked. Lenard Brown doubled, driving in Worthington. Moyer, Miller, and Ken Herr earned free passes scoring Jones and Brown. Ethan Clary tied things up at 7-all on a two-run single. Nate Butler relieved Moyer in the fifth and suffered from some defensive lapses by his infield and outfield as the Bears scored two runs to earn a 9-7 win. “We outhit the Bears 9-8,” noted Girvin. “But our pitchers deserved a better fate as the defense committed nine errors.” On Thursday, April 5, the Mules traveled to Pioneer country where they suffered a 13-3 loss to the L-S nine. Unger started and yielded two runs in the bottom of the first on one hit giving the host team a 2-0 advantage. The Mules cut the lead in half in the top of the second on a Brown single and a Miller two out single. With L-S leading by a 2-1 margin, Solanco tied up the score on an Unger double and error. From then on the Pioneers worked relievers Clary, Butler and Herr for a combined 10 walks and walked away with a 13-3 win, the last Mule run coming as a result of a Miller single and an eventual fielder’s choice. “While the Mules did put the ball in play the story of this game was the weather and walks,” noted Girvin. “Hopefully spring will finally arrive and allow for more time on the field to prepare for contests.” Comments are closed.
