by Bud Hart The Solanco junior varsity split their week’s contests, losing to Warwick on Tuesday, April 18, and bounding back for a win over McCaskey on Wednesday, April 19. “The Warriors brought their bats and never looked back as they handily defeated us in a five inning mercy rule contest,” said head JV coach John Girvin.
The Mules managed only three hits scoring no one. “It was a day when everything Warwick hit in the first three innings found a hole,” said Girvin. The Mules committed some errors during the last two innings that aided the Warrior cause, Girvin added. Girvin said he was delighted when his team of youngsters picked themselves up the next afternoon and handed McCaskey a loss. Grady Unger, a freshman, took the mound for the Mules and threw four scoreless innings, striking out six. He was also instrumental in aiding his own cause by singling in the first run. JJ Taylor got things going with a single and then stole second and third. Brett Cauler walked prior to Unger’s RBI single. In the fourth inning Henry Woy and Mike Way walked to set things up for Joey Gote and Zac Fritz, who both singled to drive in a run making the score 3-0 Mules. In the fifth, Cauler led off with a walk, moved to second on a bunt single off Unger's bat, and Cauler scoring on a Woy base hit. McCaskey scored a run in the fifth thanks to a one-out walk, hit batsman, and an error. May relieved Unger and recorded the last two outs to retire the side. In the sixth, Luke Brown singled with Brady Frampton sacrificing him to second. Brown eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-1, Solanco May retired the side in order. “Even more special was that Unger and May combined to pitch a no-hitter,” said Girvin. “What a great way to arise from such a beat-down the previous day.” Girvin said he was pleased to see that these young Mules showed the ability to move beyond defeat and to display a high degree of resiliency. “All these boys started in youth leagues, most at the Solanco Little League Complex,” added Girvin.
