by Bud Hart The Golden Mule girls ended their regular season on Tuesday, February 7, by downing the Garden Spot Lady Spartans 58-41. Solanco finished with an overall record of 11-11 and came close to qualifying for the L-L League playoffs as well as Districts. The visiting team jumped out to a five point lead, but the host Mules went on a 12-3 run to take a four point lead after the first eight minutes. “I was extremely pleased with our resiliency and how we responded after their quick start,” said Coach Chad McDowell. “This shows our growth as a team. The Mules continued to use their momentum and held a 33-19 lead at the break.” Grace Kreider took control of the second quarter scoring seven consecutive points in a stretch of about two or three minutes, McDowell said. In that same quarter Jess Cabrera and Jenna Dombach connected on a trey that added to the momentum.
Seven girls added to the scoring, three of whom hit double digits; the contingent was led by Cabrera, who netted 15 points. The sophomore was followed by Nikki Boultinghouse (13) and Alyssa Henretty (12). Those three were followed by Aleska Burger (7), Dombach (5), Liz Mowrer (4) and Jen Eberly (2). Burger led the team in rebounds with eight, followed by Boultinghouse (7), Kreider (7) Mowrer (6), Dombach (4) and Eberly (3). Cabrera was credited with four assists, Kreider three. Burger and Dombach each had two. Burger also stole the ball from the opposition twice. The Mules connected on 11 of 18 (61.1 percent) from the free throw line with Cabrera nailing seven of eight (87.5%). Solanco was hot from outside the three-point arc connecting on seven. Both Cabrera and Burger hit on two attempts with Boultinghouse, Henretty and Dombach each contributing one. “I thought our execution on both ends of the court was good,” said McDowell. “When we play as a team good things happen. “The growth this team has made throughout the season is phenomenal and it has been evident in the past several weeks of the season.” Solanco fans witnessed the final high school game for seniors Boultinghouse, Eberly and Elaina Daily. “I cannot say enough about the dedication these three young ladies have given to our Solanco girls’ basketball family over my three years as their coach, “said McDowell. “They are part of our foundation and all of our future successes. They will be missed.” The Solanco junior varsity had an outstanding season finishing at 16-3 overall. After losing to Garden Spot in New Holland a few weeks ago, the Mules evened the series with a 32-25 win at home on Tuesday, February 7. Mackenzie Gladfelter paved the way leading the team in scoring with seven points. She was followed by Henretty (6), Hanna Phillips (5), Mowrer (5), Kara McClune (4), Katie Sheaffer (3) and Alana Yoder (2). “They were undefeated at home this season,” said McDowell.
