by Bud Hart Solanco 170-pounder Ben Root was the sole Golden Mule to stand atop the podium during the 20th Annual Mule Wrestling Classic held at the high school on Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9. Root, a senior and top seed, breezed through the opposition pinning West Chester East’s Jake Fenimore in 27-seconds, flattening Hamburg’s Brendan Hamilton in 28-seconds, earning a 12-1 major decision over Northern Lebanon’s Ethan Herb and downing Hershey’s Nyiem Flucas in a 4-minute 52-second technical fall in the finals. The Mules placed fifth as a team behind Central Dauphin, Delaware’s Salesianum, Carlisle, and Northern Lebanon.
AJ Wilson (160) lost a close one in the finals to Northern Lebanon’s Blaise Bressler earning silver, while Gray Charles (138) and Kaleb Tucker (285) earned bronze. Charles won big over Rising Sun’s Silas Filliaux for third place, while Tucker pinned Central Dauphin’s Carter Urich. Chase Charles (132) took sixth with both Sheldon Peiffer (120) and Nick Yannutz (185) finishing eighth in their respective weight class. The 26-team tournament included teams from three states, and, along with Solanco, seven Lancaster-Lebanon League teams. Susquenita’s Dalton Group (182) earned both the Wink Charles Outstanding Wrestler Award as voted by the coaches, and the A. Dale Herr Award, which recognizes the most falls in the least amount of time. Group flattened his opponents in a combined time of 4-minutes; 32-seconds, including a 1-minute and six-second clamping of Salesianum’s Logan Montgomery in the finals. Prior to the finals, Earnest Eric Guyll and Conner Moran were inducted into the Solanco Wrestling Hall of Fame. Guyll had an outstanding high school career, graduating in 1972. He went on to Millersville University, and while there earned a Division III National Championship. He has also served as P.I.A.A. wrestling official for the past 25 years. Moran won more than 140 bouts for the Mules and went on to Drexel University where he competed for three years. The Drexel alumnus is now employed in a medical equipment design company, and is an assistant wrestling coach for Ridley High School in Delaware County. His grandfather, Scott Gold, the head wrestling coach for the Oxford Area High School, presented Moran with his Hall of Fame award. Comments are closed.
